Westmead Hospital is the principal referral hospital for the Western Sydney Local Health District, providing district‐level health services across Parramatta, Holroyd, the Hills Shire, and beyond.
The Westmead Health Precinct is being expanded to become a large, integrated centre of care, education and research.
Job overview
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) comprises 46 beds, 10 of which are dedicated to post‐cardiac surgical patients.
Common admissions include sepsis, severe respiratory or cardiac failure, complex transplant cases, and a wide range of surgical specialties.
The role supports and enhances the ICU team across day, night and on‐call periods.
What you'll be doing
Allocate and work clinical shifts on the ICU roster, including day and night shifts.
Participate in the management of critically ill patients within the ICU or the outreach service, under the supervision of senior ICU staff.
Perform daily duties such as patient assessment, documentation, discharge summary preparation, ordering and reviewing investigations, and performing ICU procedures (line insertion, airway management, CPR).
Actively contribute to trauma calls, emergency ward responses,



and review patients referred to the ICU from wards, ED and recovery units.
Lead and supervise junior medical staff, and participate in teaching and educational activities.
Qualifications
MBBS or equivalent, registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
Completion of four (4) years of postgraduate experience at appointment, including at least one year in an ICU.
Completion of the CICM primary exam or equivalent.
Clinical, cognitive and basic technical skills sufficient to manage critically ill patients independently within a supervised, complex clinical environment.
Strong time‐management, problem‐solving, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Commitment to continuous professional development, quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
Career goal to pursue further training in intensive‐care medicine or related critical‐care specialties.
