Role Overview

As Canva scales, change is a core part of our DNA. In this role you will work at the intersection of AI, UX, and engineering to build AI‐powered content features that help users discover and apply visual content across Canva's editor.

Responsibilities

- Lead the Elements Experience team, a balanced squad of frontend, backend, and ML engineers, to deliver AI‐powered content features such as style match, style filters, and other AI‐powered content recommendations.
- Set the technical vision for how millions of users discover, explore, and apply visual content—from browsing and filtering to AI‐driven style recommendations and contextual surfacing.
- Partner across Product, Design, and platform teams while contributing hands‐on to architectural decisions and mentoring engineers through code and design reviews.
- Use metrics and experimentation to drive decisions, define success measures, interpret signals from A/B tests and usage data, and build a culture where curiosity about user behaviour shapes future work.
- Maintain a high bar for reliability, performance, and operational health across the team's services,



while driving features at the intersection of AI and UX including model‐powered interactions and reward models.
- Support and grow a high‐performing team of ~7 engineers across disciplines, fostering a strong culture around craft, accountability, and genuine curiosity about the problems users are trying to solve.

Qualifications

- Experienced engineering leader comfortable spanning frontend, backend, and ML; you don't need to be an expert in all three, but you ask the right questions, unblock across the stack, and make sound technical tradeoffs.
- Have led engineers across disciplines and derive genuine energy from developing people, coaching, growing careers, and building team culture as much as shipping.
- Metrics‐mindful and deeply curious about users; you use data and experimentation to validate hypotheses, analyze signals, and turn insights into clearer problem framing.
- Strong product sensibility, care about operational excellence, and thrive in cross‐functional partnerships with PMs, designers, and ML engineers—shipping the feature and keeping it healthy are equally important.
- Strategic enough to set direction and hands‐on enough to unblock your team in code.
