Reporting to the General Manager – Engineering & Projects, the Senior Design Leader is responsible for leading the engineering design function across the McCulloch Group.

You will oversee the development and review of engineering designs, establish engineering standards, mentor the design team and work collaboratively with Project Management, Production, Procurement and senior leadership to deliver practical, cutting-edge and commercially successful engineering solutions.

This role requires a balance of technical expertise and leadership ensuring engineering outcomes meet customer requirements while supporting operational excellence, efficiency and business growth.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead, mentor and develop the Design Engineering team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Oversee the design, development and verification of complex mechanical, hydraulic and manufactured systems from concept through to production.
- Establish and maintain engineering design standards, drafting standards, documentation requirements and design governance processes.
- Provide technical leadership throughout the engineering lifecycle, ensuring designs are safe, practical, manufacturable and commercially viable.
- Conduct and lead engineering design reviews, technical risk assessments and design validation activities.
- Review and approve engineering drawings, calculations and technical documentation prior to release for manufacture.
- Drive innovation by identifying new technologies, engineering methods and manufacturing techniques that improve capability and competitiveness.
- Work closely with customers, suppliers and internal stakeholders to develop effective engineering solutions.
- Support Project Managers and Production teams by resolving complex engineering challenges and providing technical direction.




- Maintain the integrity of engineering documentation through Autodesk Vault and ensure compliance with document control requirements.
- Ensure compliance with relevant Australian Standards, engineering codes, legislation and the organisation's Quality Management System.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives across engineering and product development.
- Develop technical procedures, engineering specifications, operation and parts manuals and design guidelines that support consistent engineering outcomes.
- Assist with estimating, feasibility assessments and technical input during tender and proposal development.
- Build engineering capability through coaching, mentoring and knowledge sharing across the organisation.
- Represent the Engineering Department in meetings, provide departmental reporting

You possess strong commercial awareness, excellent communication skills and the ability to influence stakeholders at every level of the business.

Essential Requirements

- Significant experience in mechanical design within heavy manufacturing, mining, industrial equipment, mobile plant or a related industry.
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams or senior engineering projects.
- Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Inventor and Vault.
- Demonstrated experience designing dynamic mechanical systems incorporating moving assemblies, hydraulic actuation and complex mechanical interactions.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including fabrication, machining, hydraulics and assembly.
- Excellent knowledge of engineering documentation, Australian Standards and engineering best practice.
- Strong leadership, mentoring and stakeholder management skills.
- Excellent problem-solving, organisational and decision-making abilities.
