Emergency Dispatcher / Detention Officer

Buffalo County is seeking applicants for a dispatcher-focused public safety position that combines emergency communications and detention officer responsibilities. This role is approximately 80% emergency dispatching and 20% detention duties, with full training provided for both roles.

Starting pay: $26.49 per hourNight shift differential: +$2.00 per hour. Night shift pay=$28.49 per hourShift: 12-hour night shifts (5:00 PM – 5:00 AM)Schedule: 2-2-3 rotation (work two days, off two days, work three days; alternating weekends)

About The Role

This position combines emergency dispatching and detention officer responsibilities, with the majority of time spent in emergency communications.

Emergency Dispatcher Duties:

Receive emergency and non-emergency callsGather critical information calmly and accuratelyDispatch police, fire, and medical servicesMonitor radio frequencies and communicate clearly under pressureUse computer-based dispatch and record systemsFollow established procedures during high-pressure situations

Detention Officer Duties:

Supervise inmates in a controlled, secure environmentConduct safety and welfare checksEnforce facility rules and proceduresBook and release inmatesMaintain safety and accurate documentationWork as part of a team to ensure safety and security

Realistic Job Preview

This position involves 12-hour night shifts in fast-paced environments. Emergency dispatching can involve emotionally challenging situations, and detention duties require attention to safety, structure, and established procedures.

To support informed decision-making, candidates will have the opportunity to shadow the position prior to interviewing, allowing you to see the work firsthand and ask questions before moving forward.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or equivalentAt least 18 years oldUS CitizenMaintain a valid Driver's LicenseVision correctable to 20/20No felony or domestic abuse convictionsMust be Jail Officer certified through WI LESB or have the ability to become certified within one year (training provided).

Candidates selected for a conditional offer of employment must successfully complete a background investigation, psychological evaluation, physical examination, and drug screening.
