Back of House Funeral Operations Assistant
Cairns Funeral Directors, based in Cairns QLD, is looking for a reliable, compassionate and hands-on person to join our team as a Back of House Funeral Operations Assistant. You don’t need experience to do this job, just a genuine desire to help people at the time they need it most and to take pride in practical work done well. To help you learn the skills you need to deliver a first class funeral service, we’ll support you with training from day one. We’ll also offer you a competitive salary.
As a team member you’ll spend time supporting both the funeral itself and the care of the deceased, playing an important role behind the scenes to ensure every service is delivered to the highest standard. Working as part of a close-knit team, you’ll help to ensure we provide a seamless, sensitive service to our clients, treating every family and the people in our care with dignity and respect. We welcome applications from people who are new to the industry, and those with funeral experience. No two days are the same.
About the role:
This is a varied, physically active position that supports the day-to-day operations of our funeral home. Key responsibilities include:
• Transfer and care of people in our care.
• Preparing chapels and service venues.
• Assisting with funeral services and burials.
• Coffin and floral placement.
• Vehicle cleaning and presentation.
• General cleaning and maintenance of the funeral home.
• Equipment setup and pack-down.
• After-hours and weekend duties on a rotating roster.
We are also looking for someone who can:
• Be able to multi-task and have the ability to adapt and work in a changeable workplace.
• Someone who is career driven.
• Be able to participate in an on call roster & be familiar with the Cairns local area.
• Be at ease with death, the expression of grief and handling deceased people.
• Physically fit as heavy lifting and manual handling are required.
• Full unrestricted drivers licence (essential) and a respect to maintain company vehicles.
This role would suit people who have:

• the ability take instructions and follow them to the letter, with high attention to detail
• the ability to react calmly and compassionately in emotional circumstances
• an open mind when it comes to working around and coming into contact with the deceased, both prepared and unprepared
• excellent personal presentation and are well presented
• reliability and punctuality, with the ability to work independently
Previous experience in the funeral industry is welcome but not essential, as full training will be provided. Experience in customer service, trades, health care, emergency services, or other hands-on roles will be highly regarded.
