The Aboriginal Private Rental Assistance Program (APRAP) Plus Worker is responsible for outreach intervention support for households living in or entering private rental tenancies that require additional practical support to establish or maintain their housing.

The APRAP Plus Worker will primarily support clients in the communities where they live and supports clients to identify and address issues that are contributing to the risk of tenancy breakdown. The role is focused on achieving outcomes that lead to sustainable private rental tenancies in the prevention of homelessness.

GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 200 staff, GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.

GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, with culture at the heart of everything we do.

Position Purpose

The Aboriginal Private Rental Assistance Program (APRAP) provides professional, financial, and practical assistance to establish and maintain private rental tenancies for people experiencing homelessness, housing instability or tenancy vulnerability.

The APRAP Plus Worker works with clients to identify their strengths, needs, goals and priorities, and provides practical, culturally safe, respectful and responsive support to help establish and maintain safe and stable private rental housing.

The role works closely with and reports to the Team Leader.



The Broker’s function is focused on strengthening private rental access opportunities, while the APRAP Plus Worker provides direct client-led support to build tenancy knowledge, confidence and connection to relevant services.

Key Selection Criteria

- Demonstrated understanding of, or commitment to learning about local Aboriginal communities, cultures, strengths and delt-determination.
- Ability to communicate information in a explicit, concise, respectful, culturally safe and responsive manner.
- Knowledge of the private rental market with an understanding of the strengths, barriers and systemic challenges experienced by clients and households eligible for the program.
- A positive outlook, maintains enthusiasm and understands how own role contributes to achieving organisational vision, objectives and Strategic Plan.
- Strong engagement, communication and relationship-building skills, with proven capacity to develop positive working relationships with people and stakeholders from a diverse range of backgrounds, including program clients, colleagues, businesses, other organisations and the wider community.
- Demonstrated capacity to maintain sensitive information, always maintain confidentiality and remain impartial.
- Knowledge and understanding of the causes and impacts of homelessness,



housing stress and tenancy vulnerability, and demonstrated skills in holistic assessment and referral.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and to be self-motivated with strong time management and the ability to prioritise tasks.
- Experience in Microsoft Office computer packages.
