About the program
AIR6500 is the RAAF’s $3 billion program to develop a joint air battle management system that builds on the capabilities offered by Next Generation sensor and command and control systems. AIR6500 will create a fully networked ‘system of systems’ that synchronises air and missile defence operations in joint and coalition environments, maximising situational awareness and enhancing the speed of decision making across the battlespace.
About the role
We are seeking an experienced Product Owner to lead the technical direction and delivery of a key element of the AIR6500 system, one of Australia’s most advanced integrated air and missile defence programs.
This is a high-impact role where you will shape product strategy, guide engineering outcomes, and ensure delivery aligns with customer priorities, system architecture and mission needs.
Working closely with Product Teams and Systems Engineering Integration & Test (SEIT), you will sit at the intersection of customer, engineering and delivery while driving outcomes across the full lifecycle.
Key responsibilities
- Set and drive technical direction, scope and priorities for the product
- Own and manage the product backlog (Epics, Features, User Stories)
- Lead sprint planning, backlog refinement and PI planning activities
- Define acceptance criteria and Definition of Done, ensuring quality delivery
- Act as the voice of the customer, aligning delivery to mission outcomes
- Guide system architecture decisions, trade-offs and solution options
- Validate delivery outcomes and ensure alignment with priority and value
- Identify and manage risks, dependencies and technical debt
- Mentor engineers and influence cross-team delivery and collaboration
About you
You are a senior Product Owner or technical leader with strong experience delivering complex systems in Agile environments. You are comfortable making decisions, influencing stakeholders, and translating customer needs into actionable engineering outcomes.
You bring
- Extensive experience in Agile delivery (Scrum, SAFe, Kanban) and backlog management
- Solid understanding of systems engineering lifecycle
- Proven ability to provide technical leadership and drive delivery outcomes
- Experience translating customer needs into features, requirements and value
- Excellent analytical and decision-making capability across complex trade-offs
- Experience working across multi-disciplinary engineering teams
- Degree qualifications in a relevant Engineering Discipline or relevant industry experience.
- An Australian NV-1 security clearance and ability to access/handle Export Controlled technology, data and information
- Experience in Air Battle Management, IAMD or Defence systems
- Exposure to DevSecOps environments and delivery models
- Experience with Model-Based Engineering (MBE), SysML, Cameo or Rhapsody
