Strathalbyn Racing Club is seeking an enthusiastic and driven Assistant Track Manager / Curator to join our team and play a vital role in maintaining one of South Australia's most picturesque racecourses.

Established in 1922, Strathalbyn Racing Club is renowned for its stunning location amongst rolling hills, vineyards, and scenic countryside. Working closely with the Track Manager and CEO, you will contribute to the preparation and presentation of high-quality racing and training surfaces while helping lead a committed grounds team dedicated to excellence.

About the Role

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated turf qualified and team member who enjoys hands-on work, leadership responsibilities, and the challenge of maintaining elite sporting surfaces.

As Assistant Track Manager / Curator, you will assist in the day-to-day management of the racecourse, training facilities, grounds, and infrastructure, ensuring the venue is presented to the highest possible standard for race meetings, training activities, and events.

You will play a key role in turf management, leadership and staff supervision, machinery operation, irrigation management, and workplace safety, while contributing to the Club's long‑term maintenance and development plans.

Key Responsibilities

- Assist with the preparation and maintenance of the racing surface, training tracks, and surrounding grounds.
- Supervise, Lead and support staff, including managing teams during high-pressure race days and major events.
- Implement best-practice turf management programs,



including irrigation, fertiliser application, weed and pest control, and turf renovation schedules.
- Operate, maintain, a variety of machinery and equipment, including tractors and turf maintenance machinery.
- Monitor and maintain irrigation systems to ensure optimal track and grounds performance.
- Assist with infrastructure and building repairs, maintenance and facility improvements.
- Maintain the presentation of gardens, landscapes, and outdoor facilities across the venue.
- Promote a strong Team workplace safety culture through adherence to WHS legislation, SafeWork SA requirements, SOPs, and toolbox meetings.
- Assist with expenditure monitoring, and maintenance planning.
- Maintain accurate records relating to turf management, irrigation, chemicals, machinery servicing, and operational activities.
- Monitor Track and Training conditions, including moisture levels, compaction, and surface performance to assist in maintaining safe horse racing conditions.
- Stay informed of industry developments, emerging technologies, and best-practice turf management techniques.

You are a proactive and reliable Team Leader who takes pride in delivering outstanding sporting surfaces and facilities. You enjoy working outdoors, leading teams, and contributing to the success of major race day operations.

Essential Skills & Experience

- Strong leadership and team supervision skills. Live the Values of SRC.
- Experience in turf management, sports turf maintenance, horticulture, racecourse maintenance, or a similar environment.




- Experience operating tractors and turf maintenance machinery.
- Sound knowledge of irrigation systems, fertiliser programs, chemical application, and turf renovation practices.
- Understanding of workplace health and safety principles and safe work practices.
- Current driver's licence.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Experience maintaining turf operational records and documentation.
- Positive team attitude with a willingness to learn and develop professionally.

Desirable Qualifications

- Certificate III or higher in Sports Turf Management, Horticulture, Agriculture, or in a related field.
- Chemical Handling Accreditation (or willingness to obtain).
- Experience working within a racing, sporting, or high‑performance turf environment.
- Understanding of track condition assessment, including turf moisture, compaction, and surface performance, or willingness to learn.
