The Position

The Senior Research Software Engineer (Senior RSE) plays a leading role in the design, development and delivery of advanced digital research solutions within the HASS Digital Research Hub (HDRH).

This position provides technical leadership across complex projects, working in close partnership with researchers and stakeholders to co-design scalable, sustainable, and high-impact research software and infrastructure. The role involves overseeing development practices, guiding architecture decisions, and ensuring the delivery of robust and reproducible research systems.

The Senior RSE contributes to strategic planning, supports capacity building in research software engineering, and mentors other technical staff. The role operates across multiple concurrent projects, balancing hands-on development with coordination, quality assurance, and stakeholder engagement.

The Person

The successful candidate will have:

Demonstrated experience leading or contributing to complex technical projects, including architecture and system design

Experience working with research data, digital infrastructure, or computational research environments

Strong understanding of reproducible research practices, version control, and sustainable software development

Proven ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and engage with non-technical stakeholders





Experience mentoring or guiding other developers or technical staff

Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organisational skills

The ideal candidate is technically robust, collaborative, and motivated to drive research impact through well-engineered digital solutions.

The HASS Digital Research Hub (HDRH) supports digital research across the College of Arts and Social Sciences by providing expertise in research software, data, and digital methods. The Hub works collaboratively with researchers to deliver innovative, sustainable and impactful digital research projects.
