The location and Lifestyle:
Mt Carbine has a rich history of tungsten production and is strategically and conveniently located only 75 kms from the beautiful seaside town of Port Douglas in Far North Queensland where the Daintree Forest meets the Great Barrier Reef. The Mt Carbine Tungsten mine is 120km North of Cairns International Airport via sealed highway. Neighbouring the Mt Carbine township on the Mulligan Highway, The Mt Carbine Tungsten Mine is central to Mossman, Port Douglas, Mareeba, Julatten and Mt Molloy. For those with families, there is a choice of private and public schools, as well as universities and technical education facilities in the region.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Superintendent – Safety, Training and Risk to join the health and safety team at the Mt Carbine Tungsten Mine.
Reporting to the Safety, Training and Risk Manager, you will provide operational support in the implementation and maintenance of the site's health and safety management systems, including training and risk management frameworks. Working closely with leaders and employees across the operation, you will assist in promoting a proactive safety and learning culture, ensuring compliance with Queensland mining legislation, supporting critical risk management activities,
and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. This role is ideal for a safety professional who enjoys being hands‑on and working collaboratively to achieve positive safety outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the Safety, Training and Risk Manager in the implementation and continuous improvement of the site's Safety and Health Management System (SHMS).
- Lead implementation of and support delivery of statutory training frameworks and competency development initiatives across site.
- Assist in ensuring compliance with the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 (Qld), associated Regulations, and company policies and procedures.
- Provide day-to-day safety leadership, guidance and coaching to supervisors and employees to promote a positive safety and risk‑conscious culture.
- Conduct workplace inspections, audits and compliance activities, and monitor the close‑out of corrective actions.
- Lead and support incident investigations, hazard identification, risk assessments and the implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
- Assist with emergency preparedness activities, drills and response planning.
- Support the integration of environmental and ESG considerations into day‑to‑day safety and risk practices on site.
- Facilitation of contractor safety interactions, audits and inspections.
- Facilitate safety meetings, toolbox talks and training initiatives across site.
- Monitor safety performance, maintain accurate records and prepare reports for the Safety, Training and Risk Manager.
- Build strong working relationships with operational teams to drive continuous improvement in critical risk management, training, health and safety performance.
- Act in the Safety, Training and Risk Manager’s capacity as required and provide support to the Site Senior Executive (SSE) in meeting statutory obligations.
Key Selection Criteria:
- Current Queensland Site Senior Executive (SSE) Notice and Practising Certificate or actively working towards obtaining one.
- Demonstrated experience in a mining Health and Safety role, preferably in a supervisory or superintendent capacity.
- Sound knowledge of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 (Qld) and associated Regulations.
- High level of digital literacy, including experience in the effective application and maintenance of digital SHMS, training, risk, compliance and critical control assurance systems.
- Experience implementing and maintaining Safety and Health Management Systems (SHMS).
- Contribute to ESG and sustainability outcomes through day‑to‑day risk and environmental awareness.
- Demonstrated experience conducting incident investigations, risk assessments and implementing corrective actions.
- Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to influence safe work practices and foster a positive safety culture.
- Well‑developed organisational, analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Current unrestricted C Class Driver Licence.
- Relevant qualification in Workplace Health and Safety or a related discipline.
- Experience in open‑cut mining, quarrying or mineral processing operations will be highly regarded.
