The Role
We are seeking a VMware Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide technical leadership across large-scale virtualisation environments supporting critical government systems in Canberra.
This role will act as the senior VMware authority within the team, providing strategic guidance, architecture input, platform optimisation, and technical leadership while remaining hands‑on across the VMware technology stack.
Key Responsibilities

- Lead design, implementation, optimisation, and lifecycle management activities.
- Provide technical leadership for VMware-related projects and infrastructure initiatives.
- Support architecture reviews and infrastructure uplift activities.
- Lead platform health assessments, scalability reviews, and performance optimisation.
- Provide escalation support for complex technical issues.
- Work closely with infrastructure, security, networking, and project teams.
- Develop and maintain technical standards, documentation, and best practices.
- Mentor engineers and contribute to capability uplift across the broader team.
- Support infrastructure modernisation and transformation programs.

- Provide subject matter expertise across enterprise VMware platforms.

What You’ll Need

- Extensive experience designing and supporting VMware enterprise environments.
- Strong expertise across VMware vSphere, ESXi, and vCenter.
- Experience with technologies such as vSAN, NSX, VMware Aria/vROps, Horizon, or VMware Cloud Foundation.
- Demonstrated experience leading VMware infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of enterprise infrastructure architecture.
- Experience operating within secure government or defence environments.
- Robust stakeholder engagement and technical leadership skills.
- Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Ability to mentor engineers and provide technical direction.
