PAT Legal Pty Ltd

PAT Legal Pty Ltd is law firm incorporated by the Police Association of Tasmania (PAT) with a focus on providing high level advice and support to members of the PAT. The PAT represents the professional and industrial interests of police officers in Tasmania. The two organisations work closely together, and the businesses share the same office space.

The successful applicant will be responsible for providing legal advice to members of the PAT and their families in privately referred matters only. They will report to the Principal Lawyer and provide advice and representation for PAT members dealing with matters including, internal disciplinary issues (professional standards code of conduct investigations), defending criminal matters, negotiating and processing worker's compensation claims, managing victims of crime applications, and representing members at Coronial Inquests.

The successful applicant will have shared responsibility with the team for the efficient management and profitability of PAT Legal Pty Ltd.

PAT Organisational Structure

Membership of the PAT covers all ranks of sworn police officers in Tasmania and police officers are the only group eligible for membership to the PAT. The PAT negotiates salary and conditions of service on behalf of its members and protects and ensures the occupational health and safety of police officers in Tasmania. The PAT is non-political and non-sectarian and is affiliated with the Police Federation of Australia.

The PAT Executive Committee is comprised of 15 elected representatives from five branches (Western, Northern, Eastern, Southern and Officers Branches) within Tasmania Police who must be a serving police officer to be elected.

The PAT office structure is comprised of the Director, Deputy Director, and administrative staff.

Scope of Practice





The PAT funds legal representation for members of the PAT in relation to matters which arose from their duties as a police officer in the following circumstances:

- Professional Standards investigations into, for example, alleged breaches of the Tasmania Police Code of Conduct
- Defending criminal matters
- Workers Compensation claims
- Victims of Crime claims
- Representing members at inquests
- In any action or proposed action taken by the Controlling Authority pursuant to the Police Service Act 2003
- In any other matter where the Legal Assistance Committee or the Executive believe assistance should be provided in the interests of the membership and in accordance with the Objectives of the Association’s Rules and Constitution

About the Role

We are seeking a candidate with a minimum of 3+ years Post Admission Experience (PAE). More senior candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

While the role is full-time, part time applicants will be considered.

The position enjoys flexibility with working hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Whilst we do time record, you will not have the pressure of billing targets.

You will be responsible for the management of files from inception to resolution, with supervision from the Principal Lawyer and/or Senior Lawyer as required.

About You

You are a lawyer who wants to make a difference for your clients. You have demonstrated ability to work in a small team and want to make a positive impact, not only to your clients but to our small team as well. You possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and have an ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders.

You must also:

- Hold permanent residency in Australia
- Possess an unrestricted practicing certificate (or ability to obtain one)

The following are highly regarded but not essential:

- Experience in personal injury and/or workers compensation law
- Experience in workplace relations/industrial law
- Experience in criminal law
- A current driver licence

Essential Requirements

- Admitted or eligible for admission as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Tasmania
- At least 3 years post admission experience as a legal practitioner
