Senior DevOps Engineer
Employment type: Temporary (until 30/06/2026), Full-time.
Location: McKell Building - Haymarket, Sydney.
Base pay range: A$129,464.00/yr - A$142,665.00/yr.
Salary Grade: 9/10, base salary $129,464 + superannuation.
About the Role
We are seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer with deep expertise in Microsoft Azure to design, build, and optimise our cloud infrastructure. You will play a key role in ensuring scalability, security, and operational excellence across our systems. This role involves leading cloud initiatives, mentoring engineers, and driving automation and continuous improvement throughout our platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead projects and implementation of scalable, secure, and highly available Azure cloud infrastructure.
- Ensure high availability and disaster recovery, implementing robust fail‑over and backup strategies.
- Oversee server patching, configuration management, and OS lifecycle processes, ensuring compliance and uptime.
- Continuously optimise infrastructure costs while maintaining performance and reliability standards.
- Integrate automation into deployment, monitoring, and maintenance workflows.
- Implement and manage security controls across Azure workloads in line with best practices and compliance requirements.
- Collaborate with Security teams to support vulnerability management and remediation, including integration with Qualys (preferred).
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers to drive technical excellence and career growth.
- Partner with cross‑functional teams (Development,
Security, Operations) to deliver reliable and performant infrastructure solutions.
- Lead incident response and post‑mortem reviews, driving continuous improvement in system reliability.
- Develop and maintain Infrastructure‑as‑Code (IaC) using Azure Resource Manager (ARM), Bicep, or Terraform.
- Champion a DevOps culture by promoting automation, monitoring, and collaboration across teams.
About You
You are an experienced DevOps/Platform Engineering qualified with hands‑on expertise in Azure Cloud, driven to automate, optimise, and secure complex systems. You thrive in collaborative environments and are passionate about reliability, cost efficiency, and continuous learning. You enjoy leading by example and developing others while driving technology forward.
Essential Criteria
- Proven, hands‑on experience with Microsoft Azure, including services such as Azure Virtual Network, Azure Functions, Azure DevOps, and Azure Monitor.
- Strong knowledge of Azure cloud architecture, including scalability, high availability, and disaster recovery.
- Demonstrated experience with server patching, system hardening, and OS management (Windows and/or Linux).
- Proficiency in Infrastructure‑as‑Code tools (ARM templates, Bicep, Terraform).
- Strong scripting skills (PowerShell, Python, or Bash).
- Deep understanding of cloud security principles, network segmentation, and identity management.
- Familiarity with monitoring and alerting systems (Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Log Analytics).
- Experience leading or mentoring DevOps or infrastructure teams.
- Strong problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Relevant Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Administrator Associate, DevOps Engineer Expert) or equivalent experience.
Preferred Skills
- Experience integrating or managing Qualys or similar vulnerability management tools.
- Knowledge of SRE practices (service level objectives, error budgets, incident management).
- Familiarity with containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, AKS).
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps.
- Exposure to security compliance frameworks (ISO 27001, CIS, NIST).
