Founded in 1984, the Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation (RAC) represents the Rirratjingu people, the Indigenous Traditional Owners of Land on the Gove Peninsula. The Corporation’s aim is to ensure the Rirratjingu community is financially self-sufficient and able to deliver benefits to our members and make a genuine difference in our community. RAC operates through multiple subsidiary companies including Rirratjingu Mining Pty Ltd, Rirratjingu Fuel Pty Ltd, Rirratjingu Enterprises Pty Ltd, Rirratjingu Property Management & Maintenance Services Pty Ltd, and Rirratjingu Project Management Pty Ltd, delivering commercial success while maintaining strong cultural values.
POSITION PURPOSE?
The HSEQ Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining Health, Safety, Workplace, and Quality management systems across Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation and all its subsidiary companies. This role ensures compliance with legislative requirements, industry standards, and RAC's commitment to Zero Harm, while fostering a strong safety culture that protects our people, our community, and our environment.
The HSEQ Coordinator will work collaboratively with all RAC entities to implement consistent HSEQ standards, review risk assessments, lead incident investigations, deliver and coordinate training programs, and drive continuous improvement initiatives that align with our cultural values and commercial objectives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES?
- Lead HSEQ management systems — maintain and continuously improve HSEQ policies, procedures, SWMS, risk assessments and management plans (including DS Site), ensuring compliance with NT and Commonwealth WHS and environmental legislation.
- Drive risk and hazard management — identify, assess and control physical and psychosocial risks across all RAC operations, embedding the hierarchy of controls and supporting a strong safety culture.
- Investigate and report incidents — lead root-cause investigations, ensure timely regulatory reporting to NT WorkSafe, and coordinate workers compensation and return-to-work outcomes in partnership with HR.
- Deliver culturally-grounded HSEQ training — design and roll out induction and ongoing training programs that reflect Yolŋu culture and communication styles, in collaboration with the Culture & Community team.
- Champion consultation and communication — coordinate HSEQ Committees, attend pre-starts, and act as the trusted HSEQ advisor to leaders, supervisors and workers across all entities.
- Oversee environmental management — implement environmental plans and controls that protect Country, cultural sites, and support sustainable practice across operations.
- Manage contractor HSEQ compliance — lead prequalification, audits and inspections to ensure contractors meet RAC's safety and quality standards.
- Maintain emergency preparedness — develop and test Emergency Response Plans,
drills and equipment readiness across all RAC facilities and worksites.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & LICENCES REQUIRED?
- Working Rights in Australia
- Valid Driver's License (Essential)
- Working with Children's Clearance (Ochre Card) or Police Check (or ability to obtain one)
- Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (Essential)
- Diploma in Work Health and Safety or Quality Auditing (Desirable)
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED?
- Minimum 3 years' experience in HSEQ coordination or advisory roles, preferably in mining, construction, or related industries.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Northern Territory and Commonwealth WHS legislation, regulations, and codes of practice.
- Proven ability to maintain HSEQ management systems, particularly DS Site
- Strong experience in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and root cause analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to design and deliver effective training programs to diverse audiences.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to prepare professional reports and presentations.
- Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building skills across all organisational levels.
- Experience working in remote locations and with Indigenous communities (Highly Desirable).
- Cultural awareness and sensitivity to work respectfully with Yolŋu people and culture (Essential).
