Libraries Tasmania is a unique organisation, providing contemporary library and archives services to all Tasmanians. Libraries Tasmania is responsible for Tasmania's public library network, covering 47 locations statewide, and for the State Library and Archives of Tasmania. The State Library and Archives preserves and shares Tasmania's documentary heritage and works with communities across the state to ensure that diverse stories, records, and histories are collected and accessible for future generations.

About The Role

The position works across sites in greater Hobart, with opportunities to travel throughout Tasmania to engage with community organisations, local history groups, cultural organisations, and individuals.

The Tasmanian Archives and Special Collections unit operates within the State Library and Archives of Tasmania. This role contributes to the development, management, preservation, and accessibility of Tasmania's archival collections, with a particular focus on working collaboratively with communities to identify, document, collect, and preserve records of enduring historical significance.

In performing the role, you will contribute to preserving Tasmania's documentary heritage through a range of duties including:

- Building and maintaining relationships with community organisations, historical societies, cultural groups, and individuals.
- Providing advice and support to community members on preserving and managing archival records.
- Identifying and facilitating the acquisition of records and collections that reflect Tasmania's diverse communities and experiences.
- Assisting with donor liaison, collection appraisal, accessioning, description, and preservation activities.
- Participating in outreach activities, public programs, training sessions, and community engagement initiatives.
- Creating and maintaining collection descriptions to improve discovery and access.




- Assisting with archival projects, collection development activities, and service improvements.
- Supporting volunteers and less experienced staff through advice, guidance, and training.
- Contributing to greater awareness and understanding of the role of the State Library and Archives of Tasmania and the importance of preserving community history.

About You

We are seeking a collaborative, proactive, and community-focused professional who is passionate about preserving Tasmania's documentary heritage and ensuring that a wide range of community voices are represented in the archival record.

You Will Ideally Bring

- Knowledge of contemporary archives and collection management practices.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build productive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Experience or interest in community archives, local history, oral history, cultural heritage, or related fields.
- The ability to undertake research and provide high-quality information and reference services.
- Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Experience working independently while also contributing positively to a team setting.
- A commitment to accurate documentation, collection description, and recordkeeping standards.
- Confidence using information technology and archival or collection management systems.
- An interest in Tasmanian history and the stories of Tasmania's communities.

- Degree from a recognised university or college of advanced education, preferably in history or other relevant study area.
