Job Description

Job Objective: The Maintenance Fitter is responsible for the productive and effective maintenance, breakdown repairs, testing and repairing of trucks, trailers, light vehicles, plant and earthmoving machinery.

Job Tasks and Duties:

- Check prepared metal components for accuracy using measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers and rules.
- Lifts and hoists components onto working surface, lays out and marks reference points, and aligns parts using measuring instruments.
- Drills holes and taps threads for bolting parts together and assembles parts and sub-assemblies.
- Verifies alignment of, and clearances between, components using measuring instruments.
- Cleans and lubricates assembled articles.
- Mark out stock to be shaped and formed into metal parts for other workers.
- Fit and assemble non-metallic parts.




- Test assemble articles in workshops to ensure accuracy of fit.
- Dismantle and remove engine assemblies if required, and transmissions, steering mechanisms or other components, and check parts.
- Repair and/or replace worn or defective parts.
- Organise inspection and maintenance of machines and plant.
- Perform hydraulic repairs to plant and machinery.
- Maintain, repair and service light vehicles.
- Attend to vehicle breakdowns on civil construction sites to ensure prompt repairs of vehicles to minimise down‑time.
- Arrange transport of vehicles requiring maintenance and repairs.
- Weld parts and assemblies.
- Relieve machinery operation duties if required.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
- Adhere to strict Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
- Supervise staff.
