We are a rapidly growing Aboriginal language and culture corporation responsible for service delivery across the Gathang language-speaking peoples' footprint.

Location: Gathang Country - flexible within the Birrbay, Warrimay and Guringay footprint. Yapun.Yapun (Wauchope) preferred to support staff operations.

Employment type: Part time, 3 days per week. Initial 1-year contract (renewable).

Hours: 22.8 hours per week (0.6 FTE).

Remuneration: $55,000 per year + 12% superannuation.

Reports to: Board of Directors

Role summary

Gathangga Wakulda Aboriginal Corporation is seeking a visionary and culturally grounded Chief Executive Officer to lead the development and delivery of its Strategic Plan (2025–2030): CEO will be responsible for driving the Corporation's mission to continue, strengthen and sustain the Gathang language and culture for future generations.

This role requires a leader who can drive forward Gathang language activities and support community-led change. The CEO will oversee strategic planning, governance, operations, partnerships and enterprise development, ensuring that Gathang language and cultural practices are supported across generations.

Key responsibilities

1. Strategic leadership

Lead the development and execution of long-term strategies aligned with the Corporation's mission and vision.

Set comprehensive goals for performance,



growth and cultural impact across all strategic pillars.

Embed Gathang philosophies of knowing, being and doing into all aspects of organisational practice.

Ensure the strategic plan reflects community priorities, cultural protocols and intergenerational relevance.

2. Operational management

Oversee day-to-day operations including program delivery, staffing, financial systems and infrastructure development.

Manage resources and budgets to ensure efficiency and sustainability.

Support the establishment of key infrastructure including the Language and Culture Centre, mobile learning and digital platforms.

Ensure high standards in teaching, governance, products and services.

3. Communication and representation

Act as the primary spokesperson for the Corporation, representing its values and vision with integrity.

Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, funding bodies, government agencies and partner organisations.

Communicate regularly with the Board, staff and members to ensure transparency and accountability.

Advocate for language rights, policy reform and cultural governance at local, state and national levels.

4. Decision-making

Make major organisational decisions in collaboration with the Board, ensuring cultural integrity and community accountability.

Negotiate contracts, approve budgets and assess risks to ensure organisational stability and self-determination.

Lead strategic initiatives such as land acquisition, enterprise development and governance reform.

5. Performance evaluation





Monitor and evaluate organisational performance using relevant and strategic metrics.

Ensure the Corporation meets its goals across language programs, enterprise development, governance and partnerships.

Report regularly to the Board and community on progress, challenges and opportunities.

Key selection criteria

Deep cultural knowledge and lived experience as a Gathang-speaking person, or strong connection to Gathang Country and communities.

Proven leadership experience in Aboriginal organisations, language revitalisation, education and cultural governance.

Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects, budgets and teams with integrity and transparency.

Strong communication and relationship-building skills across diverse stakeholders.

Commitment to community-led decision-making, cultural safety and intergenerational learning.

Experience in policy advocacy, publishing or cultural enterprise development.

Familiarity with Aboriginal language legislation, funding frameworks and regional governance structures.

Qualifications in education, community development, Aboriginal studies or related fields.

This is an identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander position under section 14D of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. Proof or Confirmation of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander heritage will be required from the successful applicant.

This is a child-related position.A Police Check and Working with Children Check is a prerequisite for this role. It involves a national criminal history check and a review of workplace misconduct findings.
