Why Your Role Matters

The Psychologist plays a key role within the Psychology and Wellness team and as part of the Student Life and Experience Portfolio at UNSW Canberra. The Psychologist provides advanced, high-quality psychological services to students at UNSW Canberra, supporting mental health, wellbeing, and academic success within a complex university environment. Operating with a high degree of autonomy and professional judgement, the role delivers evidence-based counselling, comprehensive psychological assessments, and crisis intervention for students presenting with a broad range of mental health concerns, including high-risk and complex cases.

The position plays a critical role in shaping and delivering student wellbeing services, contributing to service planning, program development,



and continuous improvement initiatives aligned with UNSW’s strategic priorities. The Psychologist leads and implements preventative mental health programs, group interventions, and outreach activities designed to enhance resilience, wellbeing literacy, and early intervention across a diverse student cohort, including military-affiliated students.

Working collaboratively across the University, the Psychologist builds and maintains effective internal and external partnerships to facilitate coordinated care pathways and appropriate referrals.

At this level, the Psychologist contributes to policy development, clinical governance, and service innovation, ensuring compliance with professional, ethical, and legal standards, including AHPRA registration requirements. The role may provide supervision, mentoring, or peer consultation to other practitioners and contributes to a positive, inclusive, and psychologically safe campus culture.

The role reports into the Manager, Education Support and provides information and advice concerning current and emerging student issues and service delivery.

This position requires advanced clinical expertise, strong stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability to influence and contribute to strategic outcomes in student wellbeing and support services.

Accountabilities

- A relevant degree, full and current registration as a psychologist with the Psychologists' Registration Board Australia (AHPRA), plus demonstrated extension of psychological theories principles and practice gained through substantial and relevant postgraduate work experience and supervision.
- Deliver high-quality, evidence-based psychological counselling and interventions to students, including those presenting with complex and high-risk mental health concerns.
- Conduct comprehensive psychological assessments, formulation,



and treatment planning using best-practice therapeutic approaches.
- Demonstrated competence in a range of evidence-based therapeutic assessment and approaches, counselling and psychotherapy (e.g., CBT, ACT, trauma-informed practice).
- Strong risk assessment and crisis intervention skills in a client-facing setting.
- Influence the strategic planning, development, and continuous improvement of student wellbeing services and programs.
- Provide expert advice and consultation to academic and qualified staff on student mental health, behavioural risk, and appropriate support strategies.
- High-level interpersonal, communication, and consultation skills, including the ability to influence and advise stakeholders.
