Yarrabah State School is seeking a School Support Officer to join the team!
This position supports student engagement, attendance and wellbeing by supervising students, promoting positive behaviour, and assisting with school programs and student support initiatives.
This position is being offered in a Temporary Part-Time capacity (0.79 FTE), 60 hours per fortnight until 18 September 2026, unless otherwise determined.
This temporary vacancy is open to Expressions of Interest and any extensions to this appointment will not exceed 12 months.

Yarrabah State School is located in the remote Aboriginal community of Yarrabah, approximately 50 kilometres south-east of Cairns. The school caters for students from Kindy to Year 12 across three campuses and is committed to providing high-quality educational opportunities that are culturally responsive and community focused. About The Role
The School Support Officer plays an important role in supporting student engagement, attendance, behaviour and wellbeing across the school. Key responsibilities include supervising students during breaks and detention programs, monitoring attendance and uniform expectations,
supporting behaviour management strategies, building positive relationships with students, and working collaboratively with teachers, Heads of Year and support staff to improve student outcomes.
About You
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with young people.
- Experience working with children and young people, particularly those requiring additional support with engagement, behaviour or attendance.
- The ability to remain calm, resilient and professional in challenging situations.
- Robust organisational skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A commitment to inclusive practices and culturally responsive approaches.
- Previous experience in a school, youth work, community services or behaviour support setting.
- Knowledge of restorative practices and positive behaviour support strategies.
- Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and communities.
