City of Sydney

We transform complex business problems into human centred solutions for early stage startups, enterprise ventures, and corporate partners.

You'll play a central role in the engineering behind that - owning the hardest technical calls and building the things others find difficult.

The Role

You'll be the technical anchor of our in‑house engineering team - setting the architecture, making the stack calls, and shipping the hardest parts of our most ambitious builds. You'll lead hands‑on, coding alongside the team and setting the standard for how we engineer.

Most of our work is modern web platforms and product builds in React, TypeScript and Node; some projects add mobile, AI‑enabled features or the occasional connected device. You won't be a specialist in every one of those, but you'll bring strong judgement across them.

The pace is quick and the variety real, so we need someone proactive and self‑driven, with a genuine sense of urgency - and a knack for shaping solutions to fit each project's budget, timeline and constraints, fluent in valuable / better / best trade‑offs. You lean backend and architecture but you're genuinely full‑stack, and you care about craft and design as much as system design. You'll work alongside our in‑house delivery, PM and QA capabilities, so this role is about technical leadership and execution, not running delivery.

We're pragmatic rather than dogmatic. React, TypeScript and NestJS are the constants; the rest of our stack flexes by project:

- Front end: Next.js (React & TypeScript) or other React‑based frameworks
- APIs: NestJS, Node.js (REST & GraphQL)
- CMS: Sanity / other headless
- Infrastructure: Netlify for most builds; AWS or Azure for enterprise
- CI/CD & DevOps: automated build, test and deployment pipelines (e.g. GitHub Actions)
- AI: integrating LLMs and AI‑enabled features where they add value
- Integrations: third‑party services; occasionally connected‑device (BLE) systems

This is a permanent role open to candidates anywhere in Australia.

If you're located in Sydney we'd love for you to work on a hybrid basis but we're just as comfortable with fully remote.

What You'll Do

Architecture & Technical Direction

- Own solution architecture across our project mix – mostly web and product platforms, with mobile, AI‑enabled features or connected devices where a project calls for it.
- Make the stack and tooling calls, balancing what's right for the client, the team and long‑term maintainability.
- Shape solutions to fit the budget, timeline and technical constraints of each engagement, making clear good / better / best recommendations.
- On smaller engagements, help shape the right team and roles; on larger builds, partner with our in‑house delivery, PM and QA functions.
- Turn ambiguous problems into clear, buildable technical plans, fast.
- Build the hardest parts of our most ambitious projects, full‑stack, with React, TypeScript and NestJS at the core.
- Design and build robust APIs, data models and backend services.
- Integrate AI‑enabled features, third‑party services and (occasionally) hardware systems where they add real value.
- Own CI/CD and DevOps – build pipelines, environments and deployment workflows that let the team ship safely and often.
- Partner closely with design – translating product and design intent into robust systems and protecting design‑system integrity.

Technical Leadership & Mentorship

- Lead the in‑house engineering team hands‑on, raising the bar through code review, pairing and example.
- Mentor engineers and grow the team's capability across the stack.

- Define and uphold our development practices – standards, workflows, testing and ways of working.

Quality & Delivery

- Own engineering quality end to end, flagging risk early and holding standards under delivery pressure.
- Keep things moving with pace and momentum, making pragmatic decisions that ship – balancing craft with commercial reality.

Client & Technical Representation

- Represent DIJGTAL in technical conversations with clients – scoping, architecture reviews and trusted advice.
- Translate complex technical trade‑offs into language stakeholders can act on.

What You Can Bring

Deep, broad engineering experience across a range of platforms and project types

- A track record shipping production systems end to end, not just in one layer
- Strong backend engineering, with NestJS / Node at the core
- API design, data modelling and infrastructure
- CI/CD, DevOps and cloud deployment workflows
- Expert‑level React and TypeScript
- Strong component architecture and reusable pattern thinking
- Fluency with modern React – App Router, Server vs. Client Component decisions
- A proactive, self‑driven operator with a real sense of urgency
- Comfortable owning outcomes and moving fast without waiting to be told
- Comfortable scoping good / better / best options and delivering at pace
- Genuine design appreciation and design‑system hygiene
- Partners well with design and holds component standards
- Demonstrated technical leadership
- Leading teams, setting architecture and owning engineering practices
- Confidence in front of clients, representing engineering in technical and commercial conversations

Nice To Have

- Experience shipping AI‑enabled product features – LLM integrations, AI workflows or production AI tooling
- Connected‑device / Bluetooth (BLE) or IoT systems experience
- Azure experience (a plus for one of our key clients)
- Headless CMS experience (Sanity or similar)
