Primary objective
The Assistant Director, Engagement Projects leads the development, delivery and evaluation of student voice and engagement programs
that enable meaningful student participation in policy, program and service design. The role provides strategic advice, coordinates
resources and partnerships, and facilitates whole-of-agency collaboration to support the implementation of departmental, interagency
and intergovernmental initiatives informed by student perspectives and evidence-based practice.
Context statement
The Strategic Engagement Partnership unit provides strategic leadership to improve education access and engagement, with a key focus
on Aboriginal children and young people. It supports the Inclusion and Engagement Services branch in delivering key student engagement
and attainment programs. This includes Clontarf and Stars programs, NT Learning Commission and other student voice initiatives aimed
at increasing participation in education.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead the development, delivery, contract management and evaluation of student voice and engagement programs, ensuring initiatives
are evidence-informed, aligned with departmental priorities, and effectively capture and respond to student perspectives to improve
policy, programs and services.
2. Coordinate, research and prepare high-level briefs, submissions, reports, evaluations and correspondence to support the Minister, and
Executives in decision-making, and provide strategic advice on program outcomes, risks, performance and emerging issues.
3. Manage strategic programs and contracted services, including planning, governance, procurement, performance monitoring and
reporting, while negotiating agreements and delivering initiatives that advance student engagement and inclusion outcomes.
4. Develop and maintain effective partnerships and engagement mechanisms with students, schools, government agencies, local
government, nongovernment organisations and community stakeholders to strengthen collaboration, secure stakeholder buy-in and
ensure diverse student voices inform policy and practice.
5. Establish and promote program governance, evaluation and quality assurance frameworks, embedding robust monitoring, reporting
and continuous improvement processes to measure impact, demonstrate outcomes and support evidence-based decision-making.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, and lead the development, delivery, management and evaluation of strategic programs
and initiatives, and the ability to manage competing priorities,
solve complex problems and deliver outcomes within tight timeframes.
2. Demonstrated experience in managing programs, projects and contracted services, including planning, procurement, contract
management, governance, risk management, performance monitoring and reporting, with a proven ability to achieve strategic
objectives and deliver quality outcomes.
3. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain productive partnerships and engagement mechanisms with diverse stakeholders,
including students, schools, government agencies, community organisations and service providers, to support collaboration,
consultation, co-design and stakeholder buy-in.
4. Highly developed analytical, research and problem-solving skills, including demonstrated experience preparing high-quality briefings,
submissions, reports, evaluations and strategic advice for senior executives and government decision-makers.
5. Demonstrated experience designing and implementing monitoring, evaluation and quality assurance frameworks, including the ability
to analyse qualitative and quantitative data, measure program impact, identify improvement opportunities and support evidence-based
decision-making.
6. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex information clearly,
negotiate effectively, influence stakeholders and build consensus across diverse groups and competing interests.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of contemporary engagement practices and an understanding of how student perspectives can inform policy, program and
service design.
2. Experience working within government, education, child wellbeing, youth engagement or related sectors, including an understanding
of public sector governance and accountability requirements.
