About the business

VIC GEM Pty Ltd is an Australian wine and beverage trading business based in Oakleigh South. As our online retail and wholesale operations continue to grow, we are expanding the digital systems that support product sales, customer accounts, inventory, order processing and distribution.

We are seeking a hands-on Software Engineer to develop, integrate and maintain our e-commerce platform and supporting backend systems. This is a software development position involving both customer-facing website functionality and the business systems behind our online operations.

Key responsibilities

- Analyse business and user requirements for VIC GEM’s online retail and wholesale operations.
- Design, develop, test and maintain customer-facing e-commerce features.
- Develop and maintain backend applications supporting product catalogues, pricing, customer accounts, wholesale registrations, inventory and order processing.
- Build and maintain integrations between the e-commerce platform and inventory, payment, shipping, accounting, CRM and warehouse systems.
- Develop and maintain APIs, database structures and automated data-processing functions.
- Implement functionality for shopping carts, checkout, promotional pricing, shipping rules and order tracking.
- Maintain technical controls supporting age restrictions and responsible online liquor sales.
- Diagnose and resolve software defects, integration failures, database issues and website performance problems.
- Monitor system availability, application performance, backups, security and data integrity.
- Improve website speed, reliability, usability and mobile compatibility.
- Conduct software testing, code reviews and deployment checks before releasing updates.
- Maintain source code using version-control systems and document system configurations, APIs and deployment procedures.
- Work with management, sales,



warehouse and finance staff to identify opportunities for system improvement and automation.
- Provide ongoing technical maintenance and support for the e-commerce platform and related business applications.
- Evaluate new technologies and recommend practical improvements to VIC GEM’s digital operations.

Skills and experience

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering or a closely related field.
- At least two years of relevant software development experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining e-commerce websites or web applications.
- Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and modern web-development practices.
- Experience with at least one backend technology such as Node.js, PHP, Python, Java or C#.
- Experience with relational databases, SQL, REST APIs and third-party system integrations.
- Understanding of software testing, debugging, version control and technical documentation.
- Experience with cloud hosting, application security, backups and performance monitoring.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting and communication skills.
- Shopify, Liquid, payment-gateway, inventory or order-management integration experience will be highly regarded.
- Experience working with retail, wholesale, wine or beverage businesses will also be highly regarded.
