Hardware Engineer - Power Generation & Control Systems
Short-Term Contract Opportunity
About the Role We are seeking an experienced Hardware Engineer to support a major power generation control systems upgrade and migration program. This role will be responsible for delivering engineering design, configuration, and implementation activities associated with modernisation of existing power plant automation and control systems.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with a strong background in power generation, instrumentation and control (I&C;), distributed control systems (DCS), and operational technology environments.
Following completion of the engineering and upgrade phase, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to remain involved through system commissioning, testing, and plant start-up activities, providing continuity across the full project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engineering solutions for power plant automation and control system upgrades.
- Support brownfield migration and modernisation projects within operating power generation facilities.
- Develop and review detailed engineering design documentation.
- Produce and maintain:
- Signal Lists and Channel Allocation Schedules
- General Arrangement (GA) Drawings
- Wiring Diagrams
- Loop Diagrams
- Termination Diagrams
- Network Architecture Diagrams
- Power Supply Schematics
- Design and modify control cubicles, marshalling cabinets, and I&C; infrastructure.
- Apply control system redundancy and segregation principles.
- Support field instrumentation integration and control loop design.
- Prepare installation workpacks and construction documentation for site teams and contractors.
- Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, and cutover activities.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, and project teams to ensure successful project delivery.
- Ensure all designs comply with safety, quality, and engineering standards.
Technical Experience Control Systems & Automation
- Siemens Omnivise T3000 (formerly SPPA-T3000)
- SIMATIC S7-400H Automation Systems
- SIMATIC ET200SP HA
- Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
- Control system upgrades and migrations
- Redundant control architectures
- Operational Technology (OT) environments
Instrumentation & Control Design
- Signal rationalisation and channel allocation
- KKS tagging systems
- Loop design and circuit diagrams
- Cable and core identification
- Termination schedules
- Network design and integration
Field Instrumentation Experience with some or all of the following:
- Interposing relays
- Signal splitters
- CTs and VTs
- LVDTs
- Speed probes
- Vibration monitoring systems
- Turbine governor interfaces
- Fast I/O applications
- Earthing and shielding requirements
Safety Systems Exposure to:
- Turbine Safety Instrumented Systems (TSIS)
- Boiler Safety Instrumented Systems (BSIS)
- Functional Safety Management (FSM)
- Safety-critical control systems
About You To be successful in this role, you will possess:
- Degree qualifications in Electrical, Instrumentation, Control Systems, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
- Proven experience within power generation, power plant automation, or industrial process control environments.
- Solid experience delivering DCS, automation, or control systems upgrade projects.
- Demonstrated capability producing detailed engineering design documentation.
- Experience working on brownfield or retrofit projects.
- Previous commissioning, testing, start-up, or outage support experience.
- Ability to work autonomously and contribute effectively within a multidisciplinary project team.
Highly Desirable
- Direct experience with Siemens Omnivise T3000 / SPPA-T3000.
- Experience with Siemens S7-400H and ET200SP HA platforms.
- COMOS (Scorpio) experience.
- Coal-fired power station experience.
- DCS migration projects involving competitor control systems.
- Knowledge of power plant protection systems and functional safety requirements.
