Operations Manager – Construction, Mechanical & Fabrication

PSM Welding is a growing Australian-owned company specialising in mechanical pipework, structural steel, stainless steel fabrication and on-site welding services across the water, wastewater, utilities, fuel and infrastructure sectors throughout NSW.
Working with Tier 1 contractors and major industrial clients, we deliver high-quality fabrication, installation and shutdown services with a strong focus on safety, quality and reliability.
As our business continues to grow, we're looking for an experienced, hands-on Operations Manager to lead our workshop and site operations.

About the Role
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys being involved in every aspect of project delivery.
You'll work closely with the Director and General Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of our workshop and site teams, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on time and to the highest standard.
You'll divide your time between the workshop, project sites and the office—coordinating labour, supporting fabrication and installation teams, solving problems, managing clients and ensuring projects stay on track.
We're looking for someone who leads by example, is highly organised, makes confident decisions and isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves when needed.
As a key member of the leadership team, you will work with management to develop and achieve measurable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) focused on operational efficiency, project delivery, safety, quality, client satisfaction and business growth. Regular performance reviews will support your ongoing development and success.
Key Responsibilities
Operations
- Manage daily workshop and site operations.
- Coordinate labour, equipment and project schedules.
- Allocate resources across multiple projects.
- Support workshop and site teams when required.
- Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time and within budget.
- Monitor productivity and resolve operational issues.
- Coordinate shutdown and maintenance works.
- Ensure materials and equipment are available when required.
Project Delivery
- Liaise directly with clients, site supervisors and project managers.
- Attend site meetings and inspections.
- Coordinate project mobilisation and planning.
- Monitor project progress and identify potential delays.
- Manage subcontractors and suppliers.
- Assist with procurement and material scheduling.
- Identify and manage project variations.
- Ensure accurate project reporting.
Leadership
- Lead, mentor and support workshop and site personnel.
- Conduct toolbox talks and daily planning meetings.
- Promote a strong safety culture.
- Assist with workforce planning and resource allocation.
- Foster a positive, skilled team environment.
- Develop and monitor operational KPIs with management.
- Drive continuous improvement across workshop and site operations.
Safety & Quality
- Ensure compliance with WHS legislation and company procedures.
- Maintain high standards of quality across all projects.
- Support QA documentation, ITPs and project records.
- Ensure works comply with project specifications and client requirements.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Minimum 5 years' experience in a construction, mechanical or fabrication leadership role.
- Trade qualification as a Boilermaker, Pipe Fitter, Mechanical Fitter or similar.
- Strong background in mechanical pipework, structural steel or heavy industrial fabrication.
- Experience managing workshop fabrication and site installation teams.
- Experience coordinating shutdowns, maintenance works or construction projects.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering, fabrication and piping drawings.
- Experience planning labour, plant, equipment and materials.
- Strong understanding of welding and fabrication processes.
- Experience managing subcontractors and supplier relationships.
- Excellent client relationship and communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving and organisational skills.
- Sound knowledge of WHS legislation and safe work practices.
- Current Driver Licence.
- Construction White Card.
