Why You Should Apply
This is a skilled services firm headquartered in Brisbane with more than 300 staff across the country. It set itself a target of doubling revenue inside five years, is already halfway there, and is on track for $100m. This role sits inside the internal corporate services team, a group of around 30 covering finance, IT, HR and operations, so you are supporting the firm itself rather than working on client engagements.
What the firm wants is not another set of hands on the month end pack. It wants someone who will spend the first few months understanding what drives performance across the business units, then use that understanding to rebuild how the numbers are produced, presented and used.
This is the firm's first dedicated FP&A; appointment. If you have run planning and reporting cycles before, you get to set the standard here rather than inherit someone else's. If you have not owned one yet but you understand how it should work and want to learn it properly, there is genuine runway to do that.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Financial Controller and sitting inside the corporate services team, you will be the link between finance and the department leaders across the business. The role exists to produce three things: a group budget that holds up, clear board and executive reporting, and a Power BI layer people trust enough to use without checking it in Excel first.
This is a newly created role, so nothing has been built for you. The dashboards need rebuilding rather than maintaining, a new firm wide practice management system is coming, and the data behind the reporting needs work before it can carry weight.
The first budget cycle does not start until March 2027, so there is real time to learn the business first. If you want a mature FP&A; function with settled processes, this is not that role. If you want to build one, it is.
What You'll Do
The role splits across reporting and business intelligence, the planning cycle, and the process work that sits underneath both. Early on the weight sits with reporting.
- Rebuild the Power BI dashboards and reporting suite, from data source through to what leaders see
- Prepare monthly management reporting packs and performance dashboards
- Analyse budget to actual and forecast to actual variances, then explain what is driving them
- Run forecasting cycles across revenue, labour cost, operating expenses and cash flow
- Consolidate business unit budgets into the group budget, working directly with department leaders
- Prepare board and executive leadership reporting materials
- Automate manual reporting and improve the integrity of the data feeding it
- Build costing and profitability models that show where the firm makes its margin
Who You Are
The first filter here is the person, not the CV. This suits someone curious and commercially minded who will walk across the business and ask questions rather than wait to be briefed,
and who is comfortable being left alone with a system to work out how it should run. Underneath that sits a real technical foundation, because Excel and Power BI are used daily and the rebuild depends on both.
- Curious and commercially minded, wants to understand why the business performs before reporting on it
- Comfortable working autonomously, will pick up a process and improve it without being asked
- Strong communicator, able to write concise executive commentary and hold a real conversation with a department leader
- Exposure to budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis, whether you have owned the cycle or supported it
- Advanced Excel, including modelling and working with large data sets
- Power BI experience, enough to build and maintain reporting rather than only read it
- Degree qualified in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related discipline
- Appetite for using AI and automation to take manual effort out of reporting, advantageous
- Experience in a professional services, consulting or advisory environment, advantageous
- CA or CPA qualified or progressing, advantageous
The Offer
$110k to $120k + super, eligibility for the firm bonus scheme, two days working from home after probation, additional leave and an active social calendar. Beyond the package, you take away a planning and reporting function you built yourself, as the first FP&A; appointment in a 300 person firm heading towards $100m.
