About this exciting opportunity
Our Experimental Research Technician's play a vital role in supporting high-quality marine research by providing technical expertise across a wide range of experimental activities. These opportunities involve assisting with coral propagation, larval rearing, and the husbandry of coral and other marine species, while ensuring experimental aquarium systems are properly set up, maintained, and operated. The technicians also contribute to experimental design and implementation by collecting and managing samples, acquiring accurate data, performing laboratory analyses, and maintaining organised data records to support research outcomes.
In addition to providing hands-on technical support, the Experimental Research Technician's collaborate closely with researchers and staff to develop innovative experimental capabilities and ensure the effective use of specialised systems and instrumentation. These roles also include mentoring interns and trainees, promoting a safe and collaborative working environment, and upholding the standards and values of the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS). Through these responsibilities,



the technicians make a significant contribution to advancing marine science research and supporting the long-term sustainability of coral reef ecosystems.
About you
Our ideal candidates hold tertiary qualifications in Marine Science, Aquaculture, or a related discipline, or possesses equivalent industry experience in marine research or aquaculture. You will have demonstrated experience generating high-quality scientific data using a range of techniques, including physiological, biochemical, microbial, genetic, histological, and image-based methods. You will be skilled in setting up and maintaining aquarium-based experiments, collecting and curating biological samples, and managing research data with accuracy and attention to detail. Experience breeding and maintaining corals or related marine species under both aquarium and field conditions, together with the ability to identify key coral species of the Great Barrier Reef, would be highly valued.
Our successful candidates are effective communicators who work collaboratively within multidisciplinary research teams and are committed to supporting high-quality scientific outcomes. You will have demonstrated experience in data analysis and visualisation to interpret and present research findings clearly and accurately. A current C Class Open Driver's Licence, along with a Queensland Recreational Marine Driver Licence (RMDL), VHF Marine Radio Licence, and the qualifications required to meet AIMS fieldwork requirements for snorkelling or SCUBA diving, will enable the candidate to safely participate in laboratory, aquarium, and field-based research activities.
