Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site Mechanical Design Engineer role based in Melbourne, VIC. The Mechanical Design Engineer will design and develop mechanical components and systems for heavy-duty engines, rail equipment, and associated industrial applications, ensuring alignment with performance, safety, and regulatory requirements. Daily activities include generating 3D models and detailed drawings, performing engineering calculations, collaborating with production and maintenance teams, and supporting prototype builds and testing. The role involves reviewing and improving existing designs for reliability, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across projects.
The Mechanical Design Engineer will also prepare technical documentation, participate in design reviews, and liaise with internal stakeholders and suppliers to support successful project delivery.
Qualifications
Candidates should possess strong mechanical design and engineering skills, including proficiency in 3D CAD software and generation of detailed engineering drawings and specifications.
Candidates should possess skills in engineering analysis, such as stress and fatigue assessment, tolerance analysis, and understanding of materials and manufacturing processes relevant to heavy industry and rail applications.
Candidates should possess skills in project coordination and collaboration, including the ability to work with cross-functional teams, communicate technical concepts clearly, and contribute to design reviews and continuous improvement activities.
Candidates should possess skills in technical documentation and reporting, including preparation of design reports, bills of materials, work instructions, and compliance documentation.
A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline is required; professional registration or progress toward chartered status is advantageous.
Experience in rail, heavy industrial, defence, or related engineering environments is highly beneficial, along with familiarity with relevant standards and safety regulations.
Demonstrated ability to work in office in a workshop or manufacturing environment, with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, is expected.
