As a Laboratory Technician at the School of
BioSciences
, you will provide essential technical support for the undergraduate practical teaching
programme
. You will have the opportunity to prepare and
optimise
experiments across diverse subject areas, such as botany, ecology, genetics, and zoology, while ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. This role offers a chance to enhance your skills in laboratory techniques and contribute to the continuous improvement of practical classes.
Your responsibilities will include:
Support Undergraduate Teaching: Prepare materials and experiments,
assist
in classes, and manage equipment and consumables.
Ensure Safety Compliance: Follow OHS guidelines, label materials correctly, and
assist
in reviewing risk assessments and SOPs.
Maintain Equipment Functionality: Clean and service equipment, manage inventories, and
participate
in feedback sessions for class improvement.
Participate in Professional Development: Engage in university training courses and
maintain
compliance records.
You may be a great fit if:
You will have a degree in
Science
with a major in Botany, Zoology, Genetics, or Ecology, along with experience in laboratory preparation and techniques, excellent
organisational
skills, and a commitment to client service.
You
will
also
have
:
Demonstrated experience and knowledge in preparing laboratory classes for Botany, Zoology, Ecology or Genetics subjects;
Demonstrated experience in at least three of the following laboratory techniques relevant to the biological laboratory:
1.
Preparation of media and chemical solutions
;
2.
Aseptic technique e.g.,



microbiological techniques
;
3.
Animal dissection
;
4.
Molecular biology
techniques
e.g., gel electrophoresis, PCR
;
5.
Fieldwork, plant or animal surveying, good
plant
or animal identification skills
Demonstrate strong
organisational
and communication skills, with a focus on client service.
Are
familiar with laboratory safety practices and procedures.
Work effectively as a team member and contribute to the
School's
development.

The School of Biosciences was formed in **** through the amalgamation of the School of Botany and the Departments of Genetics and Zoology thus bringing together a critical mass of 160 Academic staff and 240 Research Higher Degree students undertaking world class teaching and research in the biological sciences
