Master <24m / Lead USV Pilot — Fremantle
About the Role
We are looking for a Master <24m to take the lead pilot seat in our USV operations and help build out the pilot team around it.
***You must be able to join withing 2 weeks***
On project you will be running remote survey operations from our Fremantle control centre on a 24-hour rotation, two back-to-back crews.
Between projects the work shifts to sea trials, systems testing and getting new technology onto the water — including USV Fremantle 02 and whatever comes after her.
Alongside the piloting you will assist with rostering the casual pilot pool and bringing new pilots up to speed.
If you like the idea of shaping how a USV crew is trained and run rather than just filling a watch, this is the role.
About Us
EGS Survey Pty Ltd is a leading provider of hydrographic, geophysical and geotechnical survey services across Australia and internationally.
With a focus on technological innovation, we operate a small fleet of inshore vessels as well as a dedicated DP1 offshore survey vessel.
EGS commissioned the first of our uncrewed survey vessels, USV Fremantle 01 — a 12 m purpose-built vessel developed and deployed entirely here in Western Australia.
Development of USV Fremantle 02, another 12 m USV, is now underway.
Our Fremantle HQ (Mews Road, next to FFBH) houses our USV control centre, R&D; workshop and survey teams.
We offer a cooperative and professional environment, with flexible hours and proximity to Fremantle's CBD, cafés and beaches.
This is a chance to be part of a small,
expert team of passionate mariners helping shape the future of survey operations in Australia.
Key Responsibilities
On project (24-hour operations, two back-to-back crews):
Pilot USV Fremantle 01 and 02 remotely from the Fremantle control centre, and on occasion from the deck.
Maintain safe navigation and collision avoidance, COLREGs compliance and traffic management in busy waters.
Liaise with client reps, port authorities, VTS and support craft during operations.
Log operations, incidents and downtime, and hand over cleanly between crews.
Pilot team:
Assist with rostering the casual pilot pool across 24-hour operations, including fatigue management.
Train and mentor new and casual pilots, and assess competency before they take a watch.
Contribute to piloting procedures, checklists and training material.
Between projects (Fremantle-based):
Support sea trials, commissioning and testing of new USVs and onboard technology.
Small craft skippering for trials, mob/demob and inshore work.
Assist with vessel husbandry, launch and recovery, and basic troubleshooting alongside the engineering team.
Maintain technical and operational documentation in line with AMSA and ISO standards.
Qualifications and Experience
AMSA Master <24m (or equivalent, with the ability to have it recognised in Australia).
Demonstrated small craft command experience in coastal and inshore waters.
Current MSIC, or eligible to obtain one.
Current AMSA Certificate of Medical Fitness, or able to obtain.
MED 3 (or higher) and ROCP/GMDSS desirable.
Experience with USV or remote operations is a strong advantage, but not essential — we will train the right mariner.
Exposure to survey operations (MBES, SSS, SBP) desirable.
Skills and Attributes
Sound seamanship and calm decision making, including when the vessel is over the horizon.
Technically confident with computers, networked systems and comms links.
Comfortable on shift work and able to hold concentration through a long watch.
Organised — you will be building rosters and keeping training records straight.
Strong communicator, able to train others patiently and give honest competency feedback.
Adaptable and genuinely interested in emerging technology.
What We Offer
A modern Fremantle facility in a outstanding location, right on the harbour.
Exposure to high-profile national projects including HIPP and offshore energy.
A real say in how our USV operations and pilot training are built.
Supportive team environment with long-term career potential.
Competitive remuneration based on experience and qualifications, plus onsite uplift when on project.
