Job description
The Greens (WA) Parliamentary team is seeking a driven media or public relations skilled to join their team from early September.
This is a key and senior position within a small team that services the four WA Greens MLCs.
This position works directly with the Leader and MLCs to develop and execute the media strategy for the Greens (WA) MLCs, provide advice on media appearances and messaging to the Leader and MLCs - as well as responding to interview requests, writing high-level media releases and other content for publication, advising on digital content and campaigns, and maintaining relationships with journalists and media outlets.
This position will organise strategic media conferences and events, monitor breaking news and play a key role in facilitating regular meetings and check ins with communications staff in each of the MLCs offices to ensure that digital comms, proactive local media and individual campaign outputs are aligned.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide media advice and support to the Leader and MLCs, especially during parliamentary sitting weeks, and work closely with them to execute media tactics on a daily basis.
Lead communications strategy and develop messaging on ongoing legislative negotiations with the government, including backgrounding journalists and briefing the rest of the comms team.
Execute and coordinate priority media events for the Leader and MLCs as directed by Party Room: press conferences, policy announcements, media events with stakeholders, etc.
Lead media liaison, including fielding incoming requests, pro-actively pitching to media outlets, developing and managing good working relationships with journalists, producers and editors.
Liaise with the Greens (WA) office and Federal Greens Senators offices as required to ensure priorities and strategies are aligned.
Write and distribute content for publication on priority issues as directed by the Party Room.
This may include writing media releases, briefs,
packages, opinion pieces etc and liaising with the rest of the comms team to ensure all channels are covered.
Ensure MLCs and comms staff are kept informed of important breaking news, and contribute to daily media monitoring.
Facilitate a collaborative culture amongst the comms team and organise regular meetings and check ins, especially during sitting weeks, to ensure priorities and strategies are aligned.
Capture content of the Leader and MLCs (photos, video) for upload to digital channels and draft and update digital channels with relevant content as required (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook etc.)
Be available after hours and on weekends as required.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Experience as a media advisor in a political, community or lobbying organisation, or as a media professional (eg journalist), or in another adjacent communications role.
Understanding of the WA media landscape across all media (radio, television, print and online).
Experience in developing and implementing media strategies.
Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and work to tight deadlines in a fast-paced team environment.
Highly developed written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
Strong analytical skills and demonstrated capacity to comprehend complex issues, think strategically and adapt to changing circumstances.

FURTHER INFORMATION
The position is offered under the Electorate and Research Employees CSA General Agreement ****.
This role requires a high degree of loyalty, versatility and the ability to maintain confidentiality on behalf of the Leader, MLCs and those who contact the office.
Contract - Between 0.8FTE (4 days per week) for a minimum 12-month contract, with an option to be 1.0FTE (full-time) and ongoing for the right candidate.
The role will begin in early September.
Reporting - This position reports directly to the Parliamentary Leader and is accountable to the Greens (WA) Party Room.
Location - The position will be based primarily in Fremantle at the Parliamentary Leader's office with the expectation of regular rotational work in every MLC's office and, during sitting weeks, Parliament House.
Some regional travel is also expected.
Hours of work - A standard work day is 7.5 hours with significant flexibility to manage your own hours of work between 6am and 6pm, with some overtime and weekend work as needed.
This role will likely start earlier for morning media monitoring and finish earlier with exact timing to be discussed with successful applicants.
Salary - $99,134 - $118,961 dependent on prior experience
