Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join their growing engineering team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong geotechnical skilled with extensive experience in shoring design, deep excavations and sheet pile systems. The successful candidate will have strong finite element modelling capabilities using PLAXIS 2D, with experience in PLAXIS 3D considered highly advantageous.
The role requires a combination of advanced technical expertise, project leadership and team management experience. You will be responsible for managing geotechnical projects through the full project lifecycle, from initial investigation and concept development through to detailed design, construction support and project completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the geotechnical design and delivery of complex infrastructure, building and excavation projects.
- Prepare and review designs for temporary and permanent shoring systems.
- Undertake deep excavation analysis and design.
- Design sheet pile walls, retaining structures, basement support systems and other ground-retention solutions.
- Develop and review geotechnical finite element models using PLAXIS 2D.
- Use PLAXIS 3D where required for complex ground-structure interaction analysis.
- Interpret geotechnical investigation data, laboratory test results and site conditions.
- Prepare geotechnical calculations, technical reports, design documentation and specifications.
- Manage projects across all phases, including investigation, concept design, detailed design, construction and completion.
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, structural engineers, civil engineers and other project stakeholders.
- Provide technical advice and construction support during project delivery.
- Review monitoring data, excavation performance and ground movement.
- Identify and manage geotechnical risks throughout the project lifecycle.
- Lead, mentor and support junior engineers and technical team members.
- Manage project scope, budgets, resources, timelines and technical deliverables.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable Australian Standards, industry requirements and safety obligations.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Approximately 6–10 years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience.
- Strong experience in shoring design and deep excavation projects.
- Demonstrated experience designing sheet pile walls and ground-retention systems.
- Advanced working knowledge of PLAXIS 2D but experience with PLAXIS 3D will be highly advantageous.
- Strong knowledge of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, earth-retaining structures and ground-structure interaction.
- Experience managing geotechnical projects from investigation through to construction completion.
- Previous team leadership, supervision or mentoring experience.
- Strong technical report-writing and design documentation skills.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical and engineering judgement.
- Strong client-management and stakeholder-communication skills.
- The ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines and competing priorities.
- Familiarity with Australian geotechnical design standards and construction practices.
- Chartered Professional Engineer status or eligibility for chartership will be highly regarded.
