About the opportunity
We're seeking an HSE & Compliance Officer to join a growing environmental processing business. This is a newly created role with the intent to bring focus and structure back to a scope of responsibility that has been fragmented across senior staff and an external consultant.
The business processes a range of materials on-site through a hazardous, tightly regulated operation, with strong growth plans in place.
Employment type: Full-time, permanent
About the role
A key priority for this role is developing and implementing the site's formal safety management plan - genuine ownership of a project that will shape how safety is structured and delivered going forward. This is a real prospect to build something from the ground up, in an environment that's currently more reactive and informal on safety.
Alongside this, the role is a blend of environmental compliance and WHS/safety compliance, with a particular focus on hazardous materials handling on site. You'll take an auditing and reporting lens more broadly - assessing whether existing controls are being followed and are effective and there's also a modernisation angle: converting procedures into easily digestible content rather than standard training documents.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement a formal safety management plan for the site
- Manage environmental compliance reporting, discharge monitoring and mass balancing oversight
- Conduct site housekeeping checks
- Lead WHS/safety compliance with a focus on hazardous materials handling
- Audit existing controls and procedures for effectiveness,
not just compliance on paper
- Modernise training delivery to site
- Monitor environmental and safety KPIs
- Support and mentor operational staff, building internal safety capability over time
- Provide operational backup across the site when required
About you
You're comfortable in a lean, hands-on environment and have a coaching mindset - you'd rather build genuine engagement than police compliance. You're equally confident with technical/environmental knowledge and strong documentation and process skills.
You'll ideally have:
- A blend of hands-on testing/chemistry experience, environmental compliance and WHS/safety compliance experience, with particular focus on the incoming acids/caustics process.
- Experience developing or contributing to a safety management plan or system highly regarded
- Comfort working alongside long-tenured, highly experienced operational staff
- Strong learning agility and cultural fit - energetic, collaborative and comfortable as a generalist in a lean site environment
- Strong documentation, process and administrative capability
Why this role
- Genuine ownership of a landmark project - the site's formal safety management plan
- Join a business with strong growth ambitions and future expansion plans
- Work in a collaborative environment where everyone operates as a team - working to help across responsibilities as demands fluctuate
- Explicit scope to build a longer-term internal mentoring and safety pathway for staff
