The Office of the Official Secretary to the Governor-General supports the Governor-General in carrying out constitutional, ceremonial, and community duties. The Office manages the Australian Honours and Awards system, provides policy and administrative support, and delivers a range of programs that recognise outstanding service and achievement across the nation.
The Honours and Awards Branch is seeking enthusiastic and motivated candidates to join our team in short-term GHO3 roles. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on administrative experience while contributing to one of Australia's most respected Award Systems.
These roles are ideally suited to candidates who are confident using technology, enjoy learning new systems, and can adapt quickly in a agile and fast-paced workplace.
The key duties of the position include:
- Undertaking primary research into award nominations.
- Updating and monitoring databases and electronic records management systems.
- Drafting routine correspondence and providing input into briefing materials and reports.
- Providing consistent customer service; building and maintaining effective relationships with colleagues
- Assisting with the coordination and delivery of other aspects of the administration of the Australian Honours system.
Eligibility
To be eligible for employment,
applicants must be Australian Citizens.
All positions at the Office of the Official Secretary to the Governor-General are prescribed and the successful applicant will need to complete a background check and pass and maintain a security clearance.

Employment with the Office is in accordance with section 13 of the Governor-General Act 1974. If you are an ongoing APS employee and are engaged under the Public Service Act 1999, Under section 67 of the Australian Public Service Commissioner's Directions (2022) - an Agency Head must grant leave without pay to an ongoing APS employee to undertake employment with the Office of the Official Secretary to the Governor-General and on return provide employment at the employee’s substantive level.
