We have a rare and exciting prospect for an Associate or Senior Associate with experience in transport and trade law (including shipping and marine insurance) to join our Shipping and Trade team.
We are flexible as to the location of the candidate but have a preference for candidates located in Melbourne or Perth.
At Hall & Wilcox, our national transport team has expertise in shipping, aviation, road transport and the insurances that underpin the global supply chain. Our team regularly litigates in the State and Federal Courts and handles disputes in Australian and international arbitration. Our marine insurance experts work with the Australian marine insurance market, international insurers and P&I; clubs to resolve coverage issues, claims and successfully pursue recovery actions.
This role sits within our General Insurance section, which has around 200 team members nationally. Our Sydney transport, trade and maritime practice is led by Partner Chris Sacré.
Responsibilities
- Marine insurance – cargo, hull, marine liability and Pleasurecraft covers including coverage, liability defence and recoveries work.
- Marine regulatory – advising ship owners and operators on regulatory issues.
- Marine commercial – front end commercial contracting and procurement work.
- Admiralty matters, including ship arrests and judicial sales and providing advice on vessel arrest, maritime liens,
and ship registration.
- Acting for both claimants and insurers in litigated claims across Australia, including in the QLD, NSW, WA and Federal Court jurisdictions.
Qualifications
- At least three years of post‑admission experience in shipping and transport law.
- Ideally experience in marine insurance law.
- Interpersonal and client management skills, as well as proven experience in business development.
- A genuine interest in contributing to the continued growth and success of our national transport and trade practice.
- The ability and willingness to supervise and mentor junior members of the team.
- Clear, concise legal writing skills and outstanding attention to detail.
