Role focus:
To provide specialist technical accounting expertise and project support that builds finance function capability, strengthens financial sustainability, and enhances the effectiveness, efficiency, and integrity of financial services and internal controls.
Key responsibilities:
- Manage the external audit process, acting as the primary finance contact, ensuring timely coordination, quality deliverables, and disciplined issue management.
- Coordinate internal audit activities relevant to financial accounting and asset management and support effective engagement with audit stakeholders.
- Lead the identification, tracking, and resolution of audit findings and deficiencies, applying a risk‑based approach to prioritisation and closure.
- Investigate financial accounting and asset‑related areas that have not been reviewed or challenged for extended periods, identifying control gaps, inconsistencies, and risks.
- Prepare clear, well‑supported technical accounting papers, including recommended positions aligned with applicable standards and legislative requirements.
- Provide robust analysis and professional challenge to existing approaches and deliver clear recommendations to inform manager decision‑making.
- Monitor and support financial accounting inputs into the asset management program and represent finance in related initiatives and forums.
- Contribute to strengthening asset‑related financial inputs into the Long-Term Financial Model, improving the quality of assumptions, analysis, and transparency of risks.
- Lead and support financial reporting and governance improvement initiatives, focusing on strengthening processes, controls, and output quality.
- Build effective working relationships with internal stakeholders to improve confidence in finance outcomes.
- Support uplift in capability within the finance team by setting explicit expectations,
providing guidance, and reinforcing sound technical and professional standards.
- Ensure compliance with legislation, Council policies and the highest standards of integrity, always protecting and advancing the public image of Council.
- Responsible for the compliant capture and secure use of public records in line with Sunshine Coast Council Records Management Policy during the conduct of daily business.
- Act in accordance with all action plans and systems that are in place to protect the health and safety of all employees, contractors, visitors, and volunteers at workplaces under the position’s control, in accordance with Council’s WH&S; policy and legislation.
- Such other relevant duties as required from time to time which would generally fall within the scope of this position.
Mandatory experience:
- Formal relevant qualification (Degree) in accounting with CA or CPA accreditation, and relevant experience in local government or a similarly complex environment. Post -graduate qualifications desireable.
- Strong technical accounting capability, including interpreting standards, preparing financial statements, and developing defensible accounting positions.
- Proven ability to analyse complex issues, challenge existing practices, and deliver practical, risk-based solutions to financial, control, and reporting matters.
- Experience improving audit outcomes and addressing audit findings or control deficiencies.
- Well-developed communication and stakeholder skills, with the ability to provide clear advice and influence outcomes in a complex environment.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes to deadlines, supported by strong report writing and Excel skills.
- Current “C” class driver’s licence, flexibility to travel/work additional hours as required, and satisfactory criminal history check.
Desirable experience:
- Background in government, local government, utilities, or infrastructure sectors.
