POSITION PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE

The Casual Theatre Technician will provide vital support to the Theatre Technical
Coordinator in the delivery of professional, technical support for the operation of the Blue
Mountains Theatre. The role will have a specialist area of audio, lighting or AV systems
but may be required to work across and understand multiple areas.

RELATIONSHIPS

Key Internal Relationships: The position will work closely with the Technical
Coordinator and occasionally the Programs
Coordinator to ensure that the theatre, its
equipment (in particular audio/visual),
fabrications and resources are correctly secured,
used and maintained.

Key External Relationships: The many varied Theatre hirers including
commercial and community groups.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Deliver day-to-day technical operation of the Blue Mountains Theatre for performances

and events, working to the direction of the Technical Coordinator and to hirers’
production requirements.

- Advance incoming productions: read and work from technical riders, stage plots, input

lists and cue sheets.
- Oversee bump-in / bump-out of shows, including the installation and de-installation of

lighting, sound, audiovisual equipment and sets.

- Safely operate the elevated work platform and venue hoist systems for work at heights.

- Provide professional technical advice to outside hirers (in the absence of the Technical

Coordinator) and work with user groups to ensure the highest quality of presentation
with the resources available.

- Ensure the ongoing protection, security and integrity of the facility’s equipment and

infrastructure, and report equipment faults to the Technical Coordinator.
- Ensure best practice WH&S; and EEO principles.

- Maintain security systems for the facility, specifically opening and closing the facility

and arming alarms.
- As required, assist with venue room hire setup, particularly A/V requirements.

- The position can work across a 7-day week with evening and weekend work.

- Other duties as required.

AUDIO SPECALISTS

- Mix front of house for live performances, including touring bands, working from the

artist’s technical rider with minimal supervision.
- Mix stage monitors from the FOH position, including via iPad tablet control from stage.

- Patch, configure, tune and fault-find the house PA system.

- Manage wireless microphone systems, including RF frequency coordination and

interference resolution.
- Program and operate show playback (QLab or similar).

LIGHTING SPECALISTS

- Plot, program and operate cue-based lighting for theatre productions on the house

grandMA2 onPC system.
- Busk lighting live for music and other unrehearsed performances.

- Rig, focus, patch and address conventional, LED and moving fixtures, and maintain

DMX / network data distribution.

WORKPLACE HEATH & SAFETY

Ensure compliance with WHS obligations and responsibilities as outlined in Councils
policies and procedures and under the relevant WHS legislation. These include but are
not limited to: identifying potentially unsafe situations or work practices and notifying your
Supervisor or Manager (or the Health, Safety Manager/Area Safety Representative);
never performing a task that you believe is dangerous or for which you do not have the
experience, or have not received appropriate instructions and training or where the correct
equipment to carry out the task safely is not available; always work in a safe manner and
in accordance with safety instructions, where applicable; use the work equipment supplied
for the job, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions), and any personal
protective equipment, which the Council deems necessary and has provided; be safety
aware and report any actions to your line manager which will assist the Council to meet
its legal workplace health and safety obligations.

at all times to comply with Councils Asbestos Management Plan and Policy.

COMMUNICATION

The position holder will be a multi-skilled lateral thinker and problem solver with excellent
communication skills. The position holder will thrive in a team environment yet be able to
work independently. The role:

- Co-ordinates work that involves a wide range of contacts in local government, various

community groups, qualified touring companies, the arts and commercial sectors;
- Works as part of a team and identify issues which restrict team performance and

produce strategies to overcome these

JUDGEMENT & PROBLEM SOLVING

- The Casual Theatre Technician makes decisions within the constraints of tasks

allocated by the Technical Coordinator, but may need to make ‘on the spot’ decisions
on occasion.

- Within the limitations of the Theatre’s technical infrastructure, it is expected that the

Casual Theatre Technician will be a fast-thinker and use independent judgement to




resolve issues that may arise in the absence the Theatre Technical Coordinator.

AUTHORITY

THE POSITION HOLDER

- Has a medium level of autonomy and uses independent judgment in the day-to-day

operation of the Theatre.
- In the absence of the Technical Coordinator, the position has the authority to veto any

action taken by a hirer who either contravenes building, health and safety regulations,
behavior which is judged as being damaging to the theatre and/or equipment or actions
which breach conditions contained in the contract of hire. It is expected however, that
any such breach be reported to the Facility Manager or Programs Coordinator.

SKILL, EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES

ESSENTIAL – ALL POSITIONS

- A minimum of 2 years’ demonstrated professional experience, with solid show credits,

presenting and / or producing live performance activities including theatre, dance,
music, launches, conferences, festivals and small to large community events for a
range of spaces and clients.

- Demonstrated high level operating experience as an audio or lighting technician on

professional digital consoles and theatrical electrical equipment.
- The ability to read and work from technical riders, stage plots and input / patch lists.

- A general electrical knowledge relevant to the equipment found in a professional

theatre space, including equipment connection protocols, electrical circuits and data
distribution networks.

- A high level knowledge and understanding of the technical lighting or sound

equipment used in the live performance industry.
- A strong service ethic and understanding of production and presenter needs

- The ability to work under pressure, to prioritise work and resolve problems quickly and

efficiently to ensure daily deadlines are achieved.
- Understanding of WHS in relation to arts spaces, including safe work at heights.

ESSENTIAL – AUDIO SPECALISTS

- Demonstrated ability to mix live bands, including touring acts, at front of house from

an artist’s technical rider, on the Allen & Heath Avantis (house console) or with the
ability to cross over quickly from a comparable professional digital console.

- Demonstrated ability to mix stage monitors from the FOH position, including via iPad /

tablet control.
- Demonstrated ability to patch, configure, tune and fault-find a professional PA system.

- Working knowledge of wireless microphone systems, including RF frequency

coordination.
- Experience programming and operating show playback software such as QLab.

ESSENTIAL – LIGHTING SPECALISTS

- Demonstrated ability to busk lighting for live music and to plot and program cue-based

theatre shows on grandMA2 (house system: grandMA2 onPC), or with the ability to
cross over quickly from a comparable lighting console.

- Demonstrated ability to rig, focus, patch and address conventional, LED and moving

fixtures, with a working knowledge of DMX and lighting data networks.

ESSENTIAL – QUALIFICATIONS

- First Aid Certificate

- EWPA Yellow Card – VL / Vertical Lift

- Current Class C driver’s licence

DESIRABLE

- Working knowledge of the other technical discipline (audio for lighting specialists, and

vice versa).
- Test and Tag certificate

- Working at Heights

- White Card
