The Opportunity

Lithgow City Council has an exciting opportunity for a Leading Hand Mechanic to join their team.

Reporting to the Coordinator - Plant and Fleet, and the key responsibility of this position is to provide support to the Coordinator - Plant and Fleet regarding the care and maintenance of Councils fleet. The position requires efficient and effective organising, directing and controlling of all available resources including mechanical staff, and liaising with external stakeholders.

This position also requires effective administrative skills, managing the payment of contractors and consultants, submitting, reviewing and actioning WHS hazards and incidents, and responding to the needs of Councils fleet. The position also will be responsible for supervising a team of staff and monitor work performance.

You will be required to be on-call on a roster arrangement and will be eligible for the associated on-call allowance.

More specifically, your duties will include (but will not be limited to):

- Repair, maintain and monitor minor plant, workshop equipment, light vehicles, trucks, and heavy earth moving vehicles
- Perform clerical duties including work schedules, procurement of supplies, record data, arrange specialist repairs, maintain workshop stores, check and approve staff timesheets and leave
- Supervise workshop mechanics, apprentices and trainees through allocating duties, monitoring staff performance, and training
- Operate and maintain tools and equipment, welding and oxy equipment, machining equipment, lifting equipment, air tools, hand tools and carry out electrical/tool tagging
- Maintain the workshop including carrying out WHS inspections
- Provide on the job training to the Mechanics, apprentices and trainees

About you





The successful candidate will meet the following criteria:

- Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology
- Current Motor Vehicle Trades Certificate
- Class HR Drivers Licence (or willing to obtain within 3 months)
- Minimum 5 years working experience in the heavy vehicle or plant repair industry
- Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of Work Health and Safety
- Demonstrated commitment to the principals of honesty and integrity

In addition, an ideal candidate would have experience in:

- HC driver’s licence
- Forklift ticket
- Experience Running a Workshop & Fleet Operations
