Time Commitment: 0.5 - day �4�8 hours) a week, ideally for months
Collaborates with: AYCC Group Leaders, AYCC group members & AYCC staff mentor
Supported By: AYCC Organiser & Grassroots Mentor

About the role:
AYCC Group Leaders are responsible for inspiring, organising and mobilising young people on
climate justice campaigns in Western Sydney, online or in a school. If you’re passionate about
climate justice, supporting teams, organising events, rolling out campaigns and building the power
of young people then this is the role for you! This is an incredible opportunity to use your existing
(or to develop!� leadership, communication and interpersonal skills to make a significant and
impactful contribution to the climate movement.

As an AYCC Group Leader you’ll build skills in team management, community organising, strategic
campaigning, communications and get to work alongside hundreds of like-minded, passionate &
fun young people. In collaboration with your AYCC Organiser & Grassroots Mentor, you’ll invest in
the leadership of volunteers and support them to organise events, bring new people into our
movement and implement campaigns to leave fossil fuels in the ground and build real climate
solutions. You will play an active leadership role in the AYCC by participating in planning, decision
making and feedback spaces, alongside contributing towards big AYCC events such as our
national leadership summits and campaign moments.

Types of AYCC Groups:
AYCC Group Leaders support AYCC groups. At the AYCC we have types of groups:

- In-School Groups: are made up of high school students aged �8 who organise and

campaign within a school. These groups can work on AYCC and local school campaigns.
- Local Groups: are made up of young people aged �0 who organise and campaign

within a geographic local area (e.g. Western Sydney). These groups often meet up in
person and can take both offline and online campaign action. The AYCC Western Sydney
usually meets in the AYCC Office in Redfern.

About the AYCC�
The AYCC is a non-profit, non-partisan organisation building a movement of young people to fight
for climate justice. We are one of Australia’s largest youth-led organisations and have a track
record of building leaders and winning strategic campaigns over the past 5 years. We create
change through three main program areas:

Campaigns to solve the climate crisis - we run campaigns to make sure Australia moves
from fossil fuels to renewable energy as quickly as possible. Our campaigns include:

- Holding back fossil fuel expansion through campaigns to stop the funding and

public support for climate-wrecking gas projects
- Advocating for investment in clean jobs and climate solutions, from the local to

national level
- Working to shift the narrative on climate justice and build mass public support for

action

. Grassroots movement-building - we are organising a national network of young people
who create change by taking action on our national campaigns, building support in their
communities, and applying the skills they learn to local climate justice fights

. Training & leadership programs providing a diverse range of opportunities - online, locally
and nationally - for young people to build the skills and connections to make an impact,
including our Schools Program.

Core responsibilities of an AYCC Group Leader include:

- Give direct support to AYCC group members within either a local group or in-school

group. Involves regularly bringing the group together and managing team communication.

- Coordinate and implement group actions to have an impact on our campaigns. This will

involve taking action on AYCC’s national campaign in your local context, doing long-term
planning and troubleshooting challenges

- Actively grow our movement and build volunteer leadership within your group by running

regular trainings and campaign actions, alongside seeking out opportunities to bring in new
volunteers.

- Attend and participate in national and state/territory/region wide events to build

connections, communication and collaboration across teams - including region wide
leadership meetings and national campaign planning spaces

- Recruit group members to local, region-wide and national meetings, trainings, events,

actions and decision making spaces.
- Play an active leadership role within the AYCC by participating in planning, decision

making and feedback spaces,



representing the views of volunteers in your group when
needed.

- Set a robust vision and culture for members of your group and support them to uphold

our values of justice, empowerment, accessibility, ambition and initiative.
- Build relationships with external stakeholders to seek out opportunities for collaboration,

shared impact & solidarity.

**Note**We don’t expect AYCC Group Leaders to fulfill all these responsibilities when they first
step into a leadership role. We will invest in your leadership and support you to take on more
responsibility over time. Some responsibilities may also vary depending on the type for AYCC
group (local group and in-school).

Core skills and attributes:
Passionate about climate justice, building a movement and empowering young people to

take collective action

- Experience and/or a desire to develop skills in community organising, campaigning,

organising events, team management and social media

- Fast learner who and can work well both independently and collaboratively as part of a

team

- Strong communication skills and value giving and receiving feedback
- Committed, reliable and takes initiative
- Embrace AYCC’s purpose, values, theory of change and culture

Expectations of AYCC Group Leaders:
If you’re new to AYCC - attend an online AYCC welcome call or receive induction from

Natasha, the staff VIC Organiser & Grassroots Mentor

- Attend and actively participate in AYCC’s Leadership Summits

- Handover leadership responsibilities to volunteers stepping into AYCC Group Leader role
- Ideally make a commitment to the role for months
- Be eligible to apply for and/or have a current Working With Children Check �WWCC�

Howwe’ll support you and invest in your leadership:
Regular � mentoring and coaching support from an AYCC staff mentor

- Involve you in the planning, strategising & decision making on our national campaigns and

local plans

- Deep leadership training around climate justice, community organising, campaigns and

communications throughout your year in the role at leadership summits, online live
trainings, etc

- Direct you towards and encourage you to participate in external training opportunities
