POSITION PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE
- To provide mechanical trade skills that contribute to the provision of an efficient, quality
controlled mechanical maintenance & repair service, which meets client and statutory
requirements.
RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to Title: Team Leader Mechanic West
Staff Responsibility: Nil
Key Internal Relationships: Employees of Blue Mountains City Council
Key External Relationships: BMCC Residents
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Service, maintain and repair Council’s plant and light and heavy vehicle fleet including:
- Inspection and testing,
- Diagnosis and faultfinding.
- Follow secure working procedures and report any unsafe vehicles/plant/equipment or
practices.
- Liaise with relevant staff to resolve problems and issues relating to the position.
- Ensure that all work is consistent with statutory regulations and with the goal of
improving customer service.
- Ensure compliance with all business polices and procedures.
- Review work procedures as requested and report on outcomes
- Integrate quality, environment and safety performance into all functions and activities
undertaken.
- Continually review and improve work methods where related to this positions work
activities in regard to best practice in environment, quality and WH&S.;
- Assist with the supervision and practical education of apprentices and non-trade staff.
- Provision of advice when requested by the Team Leader to other sections within
Council on matters relating to plant maintenance and operation.
- Adherence to WH&S; and E.E.O principals and standards including the promotion of
team principles.
- Actively participate in Team meetings
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- The position will be based at South Street Katoomba, however the incumbent may be
required to fulfil a similar roll at our Springwood Garage when requested.
- The normal hours of work for this position are 7.00 am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday
(Operational hours maybe reviewed under a Workplace agreement)
- The incumbent may be required to work outside the normal hours, mentioned above;
dependent upon client needs (this could include section 44 emergencies, weekends
and public holidays).

WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY
Ensure compliance with WHS obligations and responsibilities as outlined in Councils
policies and procedures and under the relevant WHS legislation. These include but are
not limited to: identifying potentially unsafe situations or work practices and notifying your
Supervisor or Manager (or the Health, Safety Manager/Area Safety Representative);
never performing a task that you believe is dangerous or for which you do not have the
experience, or have not received appropriate instructions and training or where the correct
equipment to carry out the task safely is not available; always work in a safe manner and
in accordance with safety instructions, where applicable; use the work equipment supplied
for the job, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions), and any personal
protective equipment, which the Council deems necessary and has provided; be safety
aware and report any actions to your line manager which will assist the Council to meet
its legal workplace health and safety obligations.
You have the right to cease or direct cessation of unsafe work. In addition you are required
at all times to comply with Councils Asbestos Management Plan and Policy.
COMMUNICATION
- The position is part of a Team where communication and co-operation within the team
is essential to perform its duties.
- The position requires the receiving of information and passing the information onto
internal customers. This would be indicative of field repairs where information is
received for the task, the task carried out and then repair information conveyed to the
operator.
JUDGEMENT & PROBLEM SOLVING
- The position follows given procedures and also statutory regulations as provided from
the RMS, Manufacturers, E.P.A, M.V.R.I.A. The supervisor may outline procedures
that need to be considered when undertaking a procedure
- The position will require the interpretation of technical manuals/schematic diagrams
which may occur in remote sites and depot workshops which requires repairing of
faults with minimal supervision/guidance.
AUTHORITY
- The position may require the delegation of tasks to non-trade staff or apprentices. It
also requires a level of authority to undertake repairs and determine the operational
safety of equipment.
SKILL, EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES
ESSENTIAL
- Hold an industry recognised Trade Qualification as a Motor Mechanic/Plant Mechanic
or Heavy Vehicle Mechanic together with M.V.R.I.A. certification.
- Relevant post-trade qualifications and proven post-trade experience and knowledge
in the maintenance and operations of light and/or heavy vehicles, and plant equipment.
- Hold a current N.S.W. MR driver’s license.
- Proven ability to work both unsupervised and in a team environment.
- Have a flexible attitude/open to change & committed to continuous skill development.
- Commitment to providing professional customer service.
- Have a sound knowledge and commitment to Workplace Health & Safety principles
and procedures.
- Have an understanding and commitment of E.E.O. principles.
- Proven written and oral communication skills also including basic computer knowledge
& skills
- Be physically fit to perform the duties and self-motivated.
DESIRABLE
- Hold a current N.S.W. Class HR driver’s license.
- Have completed and been awarded a tertiary qualification in hydraulic systems
maintenance and operations and repair.
- Proven experience with M.I.G., T.I.G., stick or oxy welding.
- Have fitting and machining experience.
- Be an RMS authorised examiner.
- A working knowledge of quality, environmental and WH & S practices.
