Primary objective
Provide professional advice and information to the Department, the Northern Territory Planning Commission, the
Development Consent Authority (DCA), relevant Government Departments and the public on planning and development
issues (both strategic and statutory) in the Southern Region.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide qualified advice and information to the Department and the Northern Territory Planning Commission to

assist in resolving complex strategic planning, land use and development issues.
2. Process and assess development applications, pursuant to the Planning Act 1999, prepare reports to the Development

Consent Authority and draft relevant memorandums and recommendations for the department.

Liaise with applicants throughout the development assessment process and provide advice on development, strategic

planning and the relevant Planning Scheme requirements.
4. Undertake inspections of development sites, reporting on general and detailed planning issues, including investigations

of alleged breaches of statutory planning controls under the Planning Act.
5. Assist in the development and ongoing review of regional, sub-regional and area plans.
6. Undertake assessment of proposals to amend the Planning Scheme (e.g. rezoning requests).

Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree or diploma related to Land Use Planning from an Australian tertiary institution, or equivalent; or admission, or

eligibility for admission, to full membership of the Planning Institute of Australia.
2. Ability to provide professional advice to government, industry and the public on land use planning and development

policy, processes and requirements.
3. Knowledge and experience in dealing with a wide range of land use and development planning issues, including high

levels of competency in the assessment of development applications made under statutory planning requirements.
4. High-level communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a range of technical, professional

and lay people and prepare written correspondence for a range of audiences.
5. Demonstrated ability to operate efficiently and reliably with minimal supervision and providing support to the team.
6. Well-developed political and cross-cultural awareness skills.

Desirable
1. Knowledge of the Northern Territory planning procedures, systems and Departmental practices.
