Canteen Manager – Position Description

Strathfield North Public School P&C; Association

Position Title

Canteen Manager (Paid Position)

Reports To

The Strathfield North Public School P&C; Executive Committee.

Position Summary

The Canteen Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Strathfield North Public School Canteen, ensuring the delivery of a secure, efficient, financially sustainable and high-quality food service for students, staff and the school community.

The role requires solid organisational, leadership and customer service skills, with responsibility for supervising staff and volunteers, maintaining compliance with food safety requirements, managing stock and finances, and supporting the strategic goals of the P&C; Association.

Key Responsibilities

Canteen Operations

- Oversee the daily operation of the school canteen.
- Prepare and serve food in accordance with approved menus and food safety standards.
- Ensure efficient service during recess and lunch periods.
- Maintain a clean, organised and hygienic workplace.
- Ensure all equipment is maintained and operating safely.
- Open and close the canteen as required.

Food Safety & Compliance

- Ensure compliance with:
- NSW Food Authority requirements
- Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) Food Standards Code
- NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy
- Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation
- Maintain food safety records and temperature logs.
- Ensure safe food handling procedures are followed at all times.
- Maintain a current Food Safety Supervisor qualification (or obtain if required).

Financial Management

- Manage daily cash handling and electronic transactions.
- Reconcile daily takings.
- Monitor food costs and minimise waste.
- Assist with budgeting and financial reporting.
- Recommend pricing and menu improvements to the P&C; Executive.




- Ensure invoices and delivery documentation are accurately processed.

Stock Control

- Order food, beverages and consumables.
- Monitor stock levels and rotate stock appropriately.
- Maintain accurate inventory records.
- Source suppliers that provide value for money while maintaining quality.

Staff & Volunteer Management

- Supervise and support canteen employees.
- Assist with induction and training of volunteers.
- Allocate daily tasks and monitor workflow.
- Foster a positive and inclusive team environment.
- Ensure volunteers work within appropriate food safety procedures.

Customer Service

- Provide friendly and professional service to students, staff and families.
- Respond to enquiries courteously.
- Promote healthy eating and positive engagement within the school community.

Administration

- Maintain accurate records relating to:
- Food safety
- Staff
- Volunteers
- Deliveries
- Ordering
- Stock
- Assist with menu planning.
- Support implementation of new initiatives approved by the P&C.;

Selection Criteria

Essential:

- Demonstrated experience in food preparation or hospitality.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to supervise staff and volunteers.
- Sound computer skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Understanding of food safety and hygiene requirements.
- Current Working With Children Check (WWCC).
- Current Food Handler Certificate.




- Current Food Safety Supervisor Certificate (or willingness to obtain).

Desirable:

- Previous experience managing a school canteen.
- Experience with stock control and purchasing.
- Experience using point-of-sale and online ordering systems (e.g. Qkr!).
- Knowledge of the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy.
- First Aid qualification.

Employment Conditions

- Paid position.
- Employment under the applicable Modern Award and National Employment Standards.
- Hours as determined by operational requirements.
- Working with Children Check required.
- Employment is subject to reference checks and any other pre-employment requirements determined by the P&C; Association.

The Canteen Manager will be expected to:

- Maintain full compliance with food safety legislation.
- Deliver efficient daily canteen operations.
- Maintain appropriate stock levels while minimising waste.
- Operate within approved budgets.
- Provide high levels of customer service.
- Build and maintain a strong volunteer program.
- Maintain a clean, safe and welcoming canteen environment.
- Support the financial sustainability and continuous improvement of the canteen.

This position plays an important role in supporting the health, wellbeing and school experience of students while contributing to the ongoing success of the Strathfield North Public School P&C; Association and its services to the school community.

Pay: $30.27 per hour
