Position Information

The NSW Department of Education provides, funds and regulates education services for NSW students from early childhood to secondary school, delivering world-class education through its public schools and providing funding support to non-government schools. We employ, develop and support teachers, leaders and other staff to deliver the best outcomes for students and to advance the wellbeing of Aboriginal people.

About the Role

School Learning Support Officers provides support for students with identified diverse learning needs including disability in classrooms and other learning environments under the direction and supervision of a teacher to support the achievement of educational outcomes. This support includes student welfare, health and wellbeing activities as required. In addition School Learning Support Officers may provide specific support for students in the following streams or settings: pre-school, vision support, hearing support, and bilingual. Student Learning Support Officers working in these streams/settings have specific additional duties, in addition to the general duties for School Learning Support Officers that are required to be performed.

Essential Requirements

- Working with Children Check Clearance
- Completion of mandatory training required by the Department of Education and a willingness to undertake first aid training relevant to the School Learning Support Officer role.
- Administration of Medications – training to be provided based on student needs.
- Health support training to be provided based on student needs (subject to transition provisions).

Selection Criteria

- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to work with students with emotional, physical or intellectual disabilities.
- Awareness of the needs of students with emotional, physical or intellectual disabilities.
- Effective communication skills.

School Information

Hunter School of the Performing Arts (HSPA) is a comprehensive public school in Newcastle-Muloobinba, offering a unique blend of academic excellence and performing and creative arts specialisation. As the only fully selective performing and creative arts public school in New South Wales, HSPA provides an inclusive, future-focused learning environment where every student is supported to perform at their best.

In 2026, the school has an enrolment of 1,151 students from Years 3–12, including 66 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Students travel from across the Hunter, Central Coast and Port Stephens regions, representing the lands of the Awabakal, Worimi, Darkinjung, Kuring-gai and Wonnarua peoples, and gain entry through audition and portfolio processes.

HSPA nurtures high potential in dance, music, drama and creative arts while maintaining high expectations for academic achievement. Students are supported by 80 teaching staff and 20 administrative and support staff who deliver a broad curriculum complemented by targeted wellbeing programs, values education, quality teaching practices and ongoing qualified learning.

A diverse range of extracurricular opportunities enriches student learning, including drama, dance and music ensembles, creative arts workshops, STEM, theatre, film and audio technology programs, sporting teams and competitions. Extension and immersion opportunities allow students to pursue excellence across multiple disciplines,



while initiatives such as Maths in Milo provide additional academic enrichment and support.

The school is committed to fostering strong partnerships that enhance learning opportunities. In consultation with the Muloobinbah Local AECG, HSPA works alongside organisations including the University of Newcastle, the National Institute of Dramatic Art, the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music and the Civic Theatre Newcastle. Dance students also benefit from industry partnerships through placements with local dance studios.

HSPA's contemporary facilities support outstanding educational experiences and include a 365-seat theatre, recording studios, production suites, specialist dance, drama and music spaces, multimedia learning suites, STEM laboratories, commercial kitchens, and dedicated visual arts, photography and ceramics facilities. A 1,200-seat multi-purpose centre, sports courts, playing fields and extensive outdoor learning spaces further enhance student opportunities.
