Your Role at St John of God Midland Public Hospital St John of God Midland Public Hospital provides high-quality public and private services to people living in the east metropolitan and Wheatbelt regions. Midland is one of our busiest hospitals, with demand for public services consistently increasing every year, making it a dynamic and fast-paced environment to work in.

St John of God Midland Hospital is seeking a motivated and highly capable Colorectal Fellow / Senior Registrar to join our established and progressive colorectal unit for a comprehensive full-time 12-month fellowship, starting February 2027.

Supervised by four experienced colorectal surgeons, the Fellowship is designed to develop expertise in the assessment, management and surgical treatment of the full spectrum of colorectal disease. The Fellow will gain extensive hands-on experience in advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive colorectal surgery, while developing skills in perioperative decision-making, multidisciplinary care coordination, leadership and clinical research.

The SJOG Midland Colorectal Unit is a high-volume service performing more than 150 colectomies annually and is recognised for its team-oriented approach to patient care, working closely with Gastroenterology, Gynaecology, Oncology and Psycho-Oncology services. The faculty maintains strong national and international professional links, is actively involved in research and education, and includes surgeons who currently hold or have held leadership positions within CSSANZ, RACS and the WA Colorectal Cancer Collaborative.

Fellowship Highlights

Dedicated colorectal outpatient clinics.

Exposure to more than 100 elective and emergency public colectomies annually.

Elective benign and malignant colorectal surgery, including inflammatory bowel disease.

Participation in colorectal and emergency on-call services.

Proctology and anal manometry experience.

Access to both colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy lists with colorectal surgeons and gastroenterologists.

Exposure to advanced laparoscopic,



minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques.

Private assisting opportunities, including complex colorectal and gynae-colorectal cases.

Supervision and mentoring opportunities with SET and non-accredited surgical trainees.

Research, Leadership and Innovation The Fellow will have access to the unit's unique Colorectal Cancer Database (CIC), incorporating PROMs, and GSTAR, the colorectal morbidity and outcomes database, providing excellent opportunities for research, quality improvement, presentations and publication. Dedicated colorectal nursing, data management and project support enable meaningful academic output throughout the Fellowship.

The role also provides valuable leadership experience through teaching and supervising junior medical staff, participating in audit and morbidity review processes, and contributing to clinical governance and service improvement initiatives.

The unit continues to lead innovation in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) and is actively developing overnight colectomy pathways, providing exposure to contemporary models of perioperative colorectal care.

The 2027 Fellowship is part-funded through a Medtronic educational grant and is seeking CSSANZ accreditation for the 2028 training year.

This Fellowship offers an outstanding opportunity for advanced colorectal training within a high-volume, academically active and progressive colorectal service.

To be successful in this role

You will Hold current registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) and be an advanced Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) SET trainee, Fellow, or possess equivalent surgical training and experience.





You will be able to demonstrate strong clinical and procedural skills within colorectal surgery, general surgery, or a comparable surgical environment and have a genuine interest in pursuing advanced training and a career in colorectal surgery.

We can offer you

Salary: $188,817 - $198,142 per annum, plus 12% superannuation

Professional development allowance $16,747 pro rata per Annum if part time A welcoming and supportive culture
