Job Overview:
We are seeking a full-time Fitter-Welder to join our Fitout and Signmaking Division. The role fabricates, assembles and welds metal parts and subassemblies used in the fitout of traffic management vehicles and in the production of metal signage.
Working from technical drawings and measurements, the successful candidate will produce and install metal components to precise specifications, operate a range of workshop machinery, and ensure all fabrication is completed safely and to the required quality standard. This is a hands-on role that requires practical fabrication skill, accuracy, and the ability to work across both the fitout and signage sides of our workshop.
Reporting Structure:
The Fitter-Welder reports to the Workshop Manager. The role works alongside, and provides support to, a licensed Auto Electrician on auto-electrical tasks.
Responsibilities:
- Fabricate and weld steel frames, brackets and other metal parts for use in traffic management vehicle fitouts.
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications and measurements to build and assemble metal components correctly.
- Fit, align and securely install fabricated parts onto vehicles.
- Assist with basic auto-electrical work and wiring under the supervision of a licensed Auto Electrician.
- Carry out repairs and refurbishment on traffic management vehicles, including replacing damaged metal parts and rectifying structural faults.
- Set up and operate workshop tools and equipment, including welders, grinders, cutting tools and other fabrication machinery.
- Examine and check completed work to ensure it meets quality and safety standards.
- Cut, rout, fold and prepare metal parts and signage blanks for signage production.
- Operate the CNC router to produce parts and signage panels.
- Operate the hydraulic folder to shape and bend metal components.
- Measure, mark out and set up materials on the layout table prior to assembly.
- Apply vinyl, reflective film and other finishes to complete signage panels.
Requirements: To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
- A relevant AQF Certificate III (including at least two years of on-the-job training) or AQF Certificate IV in engineering, metal fabrication or welding; or three years of relevant work experience in lieu of a formal qualification.
- At least two years of full-time relevant work experience (or the part-time equivalent) within the last five years in metal fitting, fabrication or welding.
- Demonstrated proficiency in welding techniques (for example MIG, TIG and arc welding) and metal fabrication.
- Ability to read and work from engineering drawings, technical specifications and measurements.
- Competence operating workshop machinery, including CNC routers, hydraulic folders, grinders and cutting tools.
- Solid attention to detail and accuracy in measuring, marking out and assembling components.
- Sound understanding of workplace health and safety practices in a workshop environment.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
