Purpose of the Role

The Transport Driver provides safe, reliable, and culturally respectful transport services for clients accessing health appointments, community programs, and outreach services.

The role supports the delivery of holistic primary health care by ensuring clients can attend appointments, including PATS-approved travel, while maintaining high standards of vehicle safety, communication, and confidentiality.

Primary Responsibilities

Client Transport & Support

- Client pick-up and drop‑off—transport clients safely to and from clinic appointments, community programs, and external health services.
- Culturally safe engagement—interact with clients in a respectful, trauma‑informed manner.
- Mobility assistance—support clients entering/exiting vehicles safely, using aids where required.
- Escort coordination—ensure approved escorts travel with clients when required.

PATS & Appointment Transport

- PATS transport support—transport clients to PATS‑approved travel departure points (airport, bus depot, accommodation).
- Appointment verification—confirm client details, times, and locations before travel.
- Communication with reception—coordinate timing, delays, and client readiness with clinic staff.

Vehicle Safety & Maintenance

- Daily vehicle checks—inspect tyres, fuel, lights, first‑aid kits, and safety equipment.
- Vehicle cleanliness—maintain clean, hygienic, and culturally appropriate vehicle environments.
- Logbook completion—record kilometres, fuel, maintenance issues, and client trips.
- Incident reporting—report hazards, near misses, and vehicle faults promptly.

Administration & Communication

- Transport scheduling—follow daily run sheets and communicate changes to the team.
- Confidentiality compliance—always protect client information.
- Support for outreach—assist with transport for community health programs, events, and mobile clinics.

Cultural, Community & Organisational Responsibilities

- Community engagement—build trust and rapport with clients and families.
- Cultural safety training—participate in ongoing development.
- WHS compliance—follow safe driving practices and organisational WHS procedures.

Key Selection Criteria

- Experience in transport or community support roles.
- Current C‑class driver’s licence with a secure driving record.
- Understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and community needs.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and communicate respectfully.




- Ability to assist clients with mobility and safety needs.
- Ability to complete logbooks, run sheets, and basic administrative tasks.
- Experience working in an ACCHO or health service.
- Knowledge of PATS processes.
- Local community knowledge and/or lived experience.

Conditions of Employment

- Must pass a National Police Record Check throughout the period of employment.
- Must pass and hold a Working with Children Check throughout the period of employment.
- Must hold a current Drivers Licence.
- Must pass safety screening checks as required based on the position and/or as requested by the funding body.
- Must hold valid Australian working rights (citizenship, residency, or current working visa).
- All positions are subject to funding.
- All positions are subject to an initial six (6) month probationary period.
- Other terms and conditions are in line with the relevant industrial instrument and internal policies.

Key Working Relationships

- The Transport Driver reports directly to the Practice Manager who provides day‑to‑day direction, task allocation, and oversight of transport services.
- The role works collaboratively with clients to provide safe, respectful, and reliable transport to and from medical appointments, ensuring comfort, dignity, and cultural safety at all times.
- Works with nurses and Aboriginal Health Practitioners to assist with coordination of patient transport needs and clinical scheduling.
- Works with Administration Team to manage bookings, transport schedules, and patient communication.
- Works with Hospitals to coordinate patient drop‑offs, pick‑ups, and discharge transport.
- Works with Specialists to ensure patients attend external appointments on time.
- Works with Community Services to assist clients in accessing broader support programs and services.
- Works with PATS Offices (Patient Assistance Transport Scheme) to support transport arrangements and required documentation.
- May work alongside other Transport Staff or Drivers to coordinate schedules and ensure continuity of service.
- May work alongside Community Members when supporting group transport or community‑related activities.

Mandatory Conduct

- Ensure, within your capability, the health and safety of yourself, staff and other persons in the work areas for which you are responsible.

- Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures and participate in regular training in safety procedures.

It is the responsibility of each staff member to:

- Attend any mandatory training.
- Attend fire drills annually.
- Attend an organisation‑wide in‑service when held.
- Attend appropriate cultural awareness training within the first twelve months of employment.

Continuous Quality Improvement

- Participate in quality activities.
- Commit to providing quality service by taking personal responsibility for adhering to current standards of practice.
- Participate in external review requirements (e.g. accreditation) to enhance continuous quality improvement.

Smoke‑free Environment

- Smoking is prohibited in buildings and vehicles within Tullawon Health Service.
- Tullawon Health Service is progressing toward a smoke‑free environment.
- Smoking in and around Tullawon Health Service grounds is prohibited outside designated smoking areas.

Aboriginal Lands Trust Regulations (Yalata Reserve)

A person must not, while they are on any part of Yalata Reserve, possess or consume alcoholic liquor.

A person on any part of Yalata Reserve must not sell or supply alcoholic liquor to another person.

A person must not, while they are on any part of Yalata Reserve:

- Inhale or consume a regulated substance.
- Possess a regulated substance for inhalation or consumption.
- Use the regulated substance for inhalation or consumption.
- Sell or supply the regulated substance to another person knowing or there being reasonable grounds for suspecting that the other person intends to.
