Use your materials science expertise to help make 24/7 renewable energy possible

MGA Thermal is looking for a Materials Scientist to work on the core material technology behind our long-duration energy storage solution.

As part of our R&D; team, you will contribute directly to the continued development, testing and quality control of MGA blocks. Your work will contribute to the continuous improvement of material performance, testing methods, and quality control, supporting the processes required for reliable, commercially relevant production.

This is a role for someone who wants their scientific work to address a real-world energy challenge. You will be close to the technology and actively involved in the work, from preparing materials and conducting experiments through to interpreting results and translating R&D; methods into practical production processes.

The Role

Working with the Head of R&D; and broader technical team, you will contribute across four key areas:

- Continued development and testing of MGA materials and blocks

- Materials preparation, instrumental analysis and interpretation of experimental data

- Technical and analytical support for Engineering, Production and other MGA Thermal teams

- Laboratory-based development of reliable, repeatable testing and quality control methods

The role combines hands-on laboratory work with analysis, reporting and continuous improvement. You will prepare and process materials, manufacture experimental samples, operate laboratory instruments and furnaces, assess results and maintain accurate, traceable records.

You will also contribute to block sampling and testing, quality-control activities and the transfer of established testing methods into other operational areas.

Some work will follow established procedures. Other activities will require you to investigate unexpected results, work through technical questions and contribute to improvements in testing methods, documentation and laboratory practices.

About You

You bring previous laboratory and scientific instrumentation experience, gained through applied research, quality control, manufacturing, an industrial environment or a combination of these settings.

You are comfortable preparing, processing and handling materials and samples before and after testing. You can undertake instrumental analysis, interpret data and communicate your findings through accurate records and clear technical reports.

Laboratory analysis experience is important. Experience with XRD, SEM, thermal analysis, wet chemistry or other relevant materials-characterisation techniques would be highly regarded.

You may have developed your scientific depth through a PhD, relevant industry experience or a combination of both.

What matters is that you bring sound scientific judgement while remaining genuinely interested in practical, day-to-day laboratory work.

Alongside your technical experience, you:

- Enjoy practical laboratory and workshop-based work

- Work effectively within a team and enjoy working collaboratively

- Work carefully and understand the importance of accurate, traceable results

- Are confident using computer and data-analysis tools

- Communicate clearly with scientific, engineering and operational colleagues

- Approach new problems with curiosity and sound judgement

- Are keen to learn new techniques, equipment and methodologies

- Want to contribute to technology that can make a genuine difference to global decarbonisation

About MGA Thermal

MGA Thermal is an Australian clean-energy company developing long-duration thermal energy storage for industrial and grid applications.

Our MGA Blocks store renewable energy as heat, enabling clean steam and power to be supplied when it is needed, not only when renewable energy is being generated.

With our commercial demonstration plant operating and projects underway, we are continuing to develop the technology while building the systems, testing methods and capability needed for broader delivery.

The team is small and team-oriented. People are trusted to take ownership of their work, share their expertise and contribute where they can add value.

We respectfully request that no agency resumes are submitted. Unsolicited resumes will not be considered.
