Suburban Connect is a consortium of global leaders in tunnelling including CPB Contractors, Ghella and Acciona Construction delivering the Tunnels South package on Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East, on behalf of Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA). We have a broad range of roles available to build our diverse and inclusive workforce, including construction and engineering, planning and environmental management, corporate support, administration, communications and many others. SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill is now under construction, with tunnelling to start in 2026 and trains to be running by 2035. Suburban Connect is constructing the 16 kms of tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley using 4 tunnel boring machines and a range of excavation methods. The works also include 55 cross passages, 2 tunnel portal structures, 2 station box excavations and associated supports.
Purpose of the role
This role is responsible for providing shift engineering support on one of Melbourne’s largest infrastructure projects. Working as part of the broader Tunnelling team, the Shift Engineer will maintain regular communication with Project Engineer and Senior Project Engineer, and will at times be required to work independently during night works.
The Key Responsibilities Of The Role Include
- Work with Construction Delivery teams in planning and executing tunnelling and construction activities in accordance with design, methodology and program requirements.
- Provide on‑shift site engineering support to the delivery team, demonstrating a sound understanding of construction methodology, design requirements and project specifications.
- Assist in the identification, development and implementation of technical and construction solutions to address site issues, constraints and improvement opportunities.
- Review construction documentation including ITPs, work packs, methodologies and drawings to ensure works are delivered in accordance with approved designs and standards.
- Support the implementation and verification of quality controls on shift, including inspections, hold points, test results and construction records.
- Coordinate and support on‑shift interfaces between tunnel operations, construction crews, subcontractors and specialist teams.
- Support any on‑shift client or stakeholder site walks, outlining current scope of works and proactively addressing technical or construction-related queries.
- Monitor construction progress against program, identify risks to delivery and elevate emerging issues to Project Engineer.
We Are Looking For Someone With
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline from a recognised tertiary institution.
- Minimum 3 years’ engineering experience.
