What are the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations?
The 18th Edition of BS 7671:2018 defines how electrical installations in the UK must be designed, installed, and tested. It’s the industry standard that keeps both electricians and end-users safe.
The regulations came into effect on 1 January 2019, replacing the 17th Edition.
Since then, the Amendment 4 (BS 7671:2018 + A4:2026) update (released in April 2026) has refined and expanded these requirements even further.
What's been introduced in Amendment 4?
Some of the biggest changes to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations after the inclusion of Amendment 4 include:
- Battery energy storage systems (BESS): Recent rules for home and commercial battery storage installations.
- Power over Ethernet (PoE): New guidance for PoE systems used in smart buildings and networking.
- ICT and functional earthing: Updated requirements for earthing in data and communication systems.

- Consolidated “Orange Book”: Amendment 4 combines the original 18th Edition plus Amendments 1, 2, and 3 into one updated publication.
