About the role

Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) is seeking a compassionate and dedicated School Based Social Worker to join our team on a part-time basis. Based in Terrigal, NSW, this role is fundamental to supporting the emotional, social and psychological wellbeing of students within our school environment. As a School Based Social Worker, you will play a vital role in identifying and addressing the social, emotional and environmental factors that impact student success and wellbeing.

This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students on the autism spectrum and contribute directly to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Key responsibilities

1. Conduct comprehensive assessments of students' social, emotional and behavioural needs to identify areas requiring support and intervention
2. Develop and implement tailored social and emotional support plans for individual students and groups
3. Provide direct counselling and therapeutic support to students experiencing emotional, social or personal difficulties
4. Collaborate with teaching staff, parents and guardians to ensure consistent and coordinated support across home and school environments
5. Facilitate social skills groups and peer support programmes to enhance student relationships and interpersonal development
6. Advocate for student wellbeing and ensure appropriate safeguarding protocols are followed at all times
7. Maintain accurate and confidential case records and progress documentation in accordance with professional standards
8. Participate in whole-school initiatives focused on mental health awareness and wellbeing promotion
9. Liaise with external agencies, health professionals and community services when additional support is required
10. Contribute to staff training and consultation regarding social and emotional support strategies





What we're looking for

1. A recognised qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or a related discipline at degree level or higher
2. Current professional registration or eligibility for registration with the relevant regulatory body (such as the Australian Association of Social Workers or equivalent)
3. Minimum of 2-3 years' experience in a school-based, educational or young person-focused setting
4. Demonstrated knowledge of child development, mental health and wellbeing within educational contexts
5. Experience working with neurodivergent young people, including those on the autism spectrum, is highly desirable
6. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build rapport with students, families and staff
7. Proficiency in assessment, intervention planning and therapeutic support delivery
8. A person-centred and trauma-informed approach to working with young people
9. Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple cases effectively
10. A commitment to safeguarding, child protection and maintaining professional confidentiality
11. Flexibility, resilience and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
