Senior BI Developer - Temporary 12-month opportunity (Sydney) Department of Customer Service Reference number: req52913 Occupation: Information and Communications Technology Work type: Full-Time Location: Sydney City Salary: AU$133,348 - AU$146,945 plus superannuation Closing date: 31 July 2026 at 10:00 AM A senior BI developer who leads the delivery of insights that drive policy and service delivery for NSW. The role is full-time, 12-month temporary (with option to extend). The compensation aligns with Clerk grade 9/10 and includes leave loading.
About the team The analytics team is high-performing and trusted by executive leadership. The team develops high-value analytics use cases, provides advisory expertise, maintains critical reporting solutions and focuses on creating value and business outcomes.
Responsibilities - Define and lead the production of reports, visualisations, and recommendations to address business problems.
- Extract and transform data, build semantic models, set up data warehouses and design data systems.
- Identify, interpret and analyse data using statistical techniques to answer business problems.
- Raise, scope and implement process improvement opportunities.
- Provide subject-matter expertise and recommend improvements to enhance data products and service reliability.
- Oversee operational support for BI solutions, including monitoring, data refresh, reconciliation, troubleshooting, and defect resolution.
- Lead business- requirement gathering and stakeholder management for new and existing analytics solutions; maintain design documentation.
- Collaborate with and mentor junior developers, ensuring best practice.
Qualifications - Demonstrated experience leading data visualisation, data science, or advanced analytics projects.
- Experience designing, developing and deploying reporting solutions in Power BI, Tableau, Qlik or similar.
- Deep understanding of analytics best practices, data governance and reporting applications.
- Experience mentoring junior team members and working in cross-functional teams.
- Strong stakeholder management and workshop facilitation skills; ability to present insights clearly.
- Capacity to translate technical challenges into simple solutions and milestones.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Econometrics or related field.
Technical
Skills - Advanced Power BI data visualisation and reporting.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric and cloud-based data platforms.
- Experience with version control and CI/CD pipelines for data workflows.
- Intermediate SQL expertise (advanced queries, performance tuning).
- Intermediate Tableau and/or Qlik visualisation skills.
- Solid understanding of data modelling and visualisation principles.
- Experience with SAP Business Warehouse and SAP data structures.
- Knowledge of data governance, data quality, and security best practices.
